Job Overview

During the 2024-25 academic year, the Director of Student Conduct will lead the implementation of a newly revised Code of Student Conduct that seeks to center educational development and restorative responses. This highly collaborative process will involve engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders about the underlying principles, practices and procedures of student conduct and community standards. This unique leadership opportunity provides meaningful engagement with university leaders and broad engagement with the campus community.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, the Director is responsible for supporting students in maintaining a safe, honest, and responsible campus community by leading efforts to address all reports of non-academic misconduct. Along with other members of the Office of Student Conduct, they direct educational and adjudicatory proceedings in a manner that holds students accountable and supports learning and development.

The Director regularly communicates and collaborates with a variety of stakeholders and collaborators, including divisional and university leadership, undergraduate and graduate students, University Counsel and external legal representatives, parents and family members, university faculty and staff. In addition to adjudicating cases, they are responsible for departmental planning and budget management, special projects or assignments, committee involvement, trainings, faculty outreach, and other initiatives of value to the University community. Central to these responsibilities is promoting positive citizenship and enforcing community and university standards of conduct.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership and vision for the Office of Student Conduct in promoting responsibility, effective conflict management, and restoration of community standards

  • Adjudicating violations of the Code of Student Conduct including the most serious and complex cases

  • Providing supervision for the Associate Director of Student Conduct and the Assistant Director of Student Conduct

  • Maintaining and overseeing any review and revision of the Code of Student Conduct, including the implementation of a revised Student Code for the 2024-25 school year

  • Partnering with Residential Living to provide guidance, training, and oversight for student conduct practices within our residential communities

  • Conducting training and outreach to educate and inform various constituents about community standards in general and the Code of Student Conduct in particular

  • Advancing, when appropriate, information and opportunities for alternative resolutions that meet the educational needs of the community, particularly Restorative Justice practices

  • Liaising and collaborating with several university departments, committees and student organizations, including but not limited to the Office of Residential Living; Georgetown University Police Department; Office of Neighborhood Life; Counseling and Psychiatric Services; General Counsel; Case Management; Restorative Justice Task Force; Threat Assessment; Georgetown University Qatar Campus administration; student government; Student Advocacy Office; and others

  • Overseeing data management to track and report all data regarding student violations, sanctions, resolutions and participation eligibility

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel administration, law or related field – preference for Doctorate or Juris Doctorate

  • At least 6 years of full-time, professional experience in student conduct, community standards, judicial services or related experience in a college or university setting – preference for 8 years of full-time, professional experience in student judicial services or related experience in a college or university setting

  • Understanding of - and commitment to - student development, character formation and community building – preference for Eight years’ full-time, professional experience in student judicial services or related experience in a college or university setting

  • Ability to handle sensitive cases and emergency situations and to make sound judgments regarding immediate priorities

  • Demonstrable familiarity with current Title IX obligations

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong analytical and writing skills and ability to express complex ideas to a variety of audiences

  • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with a diverse community of students, parents and family members, faculty/staff, partner offices and the neighboring community

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with restorative justice practices in a higher education setting

  • Experience working with Maxient, a student conduct database

  • Experience administering student conduct standards in relation to current Title IX regulations

  • Experience with stakeholder relationships, including local governance bodies and community organizations
