Job Description

The School of Engineering (SOEN) at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks an Instructional Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering with a start date of Fall 2024. SOEN is looking for exceptional candidates who have a robust commitment to a hands-on engineering education philosophy that emphasizes workplace readiness, and to becoming academic and professional service role models. Primary duties include a 5-5 teaching load with a reduced load granted based on expanded service and other needs. While the successful candidate will be primarily teaching in SOEN’s undergraduate Computer Engineering program, they must also be capable of teaching graduate-level courses as part of SOEN’s near-future expansion plans. This is a fixed-term, non-tenure, and full-time position with an initial appointment of up to 3 years that can be renewed. Renewals can be for up to 5 years at a time based on performance, need, and funding. The position offers the opportunity of promotion to the rank of Instructional Associate Professor (and later to Instructional Professor) if certain conditions are met. For more details about instructional faculty lines, please review the TAMIU Faculty Handbook.

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is a comprehensive regional university and part of The Texas A&M University System. Poised at the Gateway to México and serving as the cultural and intellectual hub of a vibrant multilingual and multicultural community, it is also a designated Hispanic-serving institution (HSI). TAMIU is a growing university of over 8,000 students and is home to five colleges/schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business, the College of Education, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences with its Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing, and University College. For more information, visit www.tamiu.edu.

The undergraduate Computer Engineering program was launched in Fall 2021. It is currently the fastest-growing program at TAMIU and has an enrollment of around 300 students. The program graduated its first class of students in Fall 2022 and will have its initial ABET accreditation visit this November. The program offers students a complementary perspective of both hardware and software systems with a carefully-designed curriculum that emphasizes industry-level research-based workplace preparedness.

Required Qualifications:

Successful candidates must have a terminal degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. Applicants close to finishing their doctoral studies will be considered if their degree completion is prior to the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Successful candidates must have the ability to revamp and coordinate instruction in the gateway programming and foundational courses by following state-of-the-art instructional pedagogy. Furthermore, a newly funded initiative will allow TAMIU and Laredo College to coordinate their curriculum in Computer Science and Engineering to streamline the transfer process. The successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in this initiative. Gateway courses are very significant in their impact on the ability of students to persist in and progress through their major. They also establish the proper foundations for students to grasp the infrastructure of knowledge provided in upper-level coursework. Beyond that, successful candidates must also be able to teach upper-level coursework in the computer engineering program.

Successful candidates must also demonstrate preparedness for academic service. This includes serving on department, college, and university committees, assisting in ABET accreditation activities, contributing to curriculum development and revision efforts, and participating in retention, recruitment, and outreach activities.

In addition to Computer Engineering, the School of Engineering offers two other undergraduate programs in Systems Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. There is also a Pre-Engineering program that is a bridge for transfer to other institutions or gives students an opportunity to explore engineering prior to choosing a major within the School. Future expansion plans include a multidisciplinary Systems Engineering graduate program that will tentatively be launched in Fall 2025. There is also an undergraduate Civil Engineering program currently in the early development phase. Alumni of the School of Engineering have excellent job placement in a wide range of settings, including Fortune 500 companies and various business enterprises, as well as prestigious federal, state, and local government agencies.
