New York University Chair, Department of Global and Environmental Health in United States

The School of Global Public Health (GPH) is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as the inaugural Chair for the newly established Department of Global and Environmental Health (GEH). Dynamic and exciting growth is anticipated for GEH, which has recently transitioned from Program to Department status and has the unique opportunity to benefit from NYU’s global campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai as well as 12 global academic centers on six continents. The Department emphasizes research and teaching of transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions, involving interdisciplinary collaboration and the delivery of population-based care. The Department has over 200 MPH students, the highest enrollment in the School, and is dedicated to equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to become the next generation of global health leaders. Programs include integrated practice experiences in a range of countries. The Department has three Master of Public Health tracks: Global Health MPH, online Global Health MPH, and Environmental Public Health Sciences MPH. The Department also offers five dual-degree programs: MPH/MSW, MPH/MPA, MPH/MSN, MPH/MD, and MPH/DDS.

The Department is also home to a diverse set of dynamic centers, labs, and initiatives that give students access to action-oriented learning settings and invaluable mentorship with esteemed faculty members and peers. The Department’s core faculty currently consists of seven primary faculty, seven secondary and visiting faculty, and eight affiliate and adjunct faculty, who are actively engaged in research, policy, and practice to advance the understanding of areas such as infectious disease transmission, pandemic preparedness and response, environmental hazards, climate change, HIV/AIDS, smoking cessation, sickle cell disease, mental and behavioral health, and strengthening of health systems in many areas of the world. The faculty is expected to grow in the years ahead.

The inaugural Chair will have the exciting opportunity to shape the new Department's strategic vision and future growth, enhance its visibility, strengthen its international reputation, and extend its influence and effectiveness in advancing health and health equity. As the Department leader, the Chair will oversee the curriculum in all the degree tracks to ensure that the pedagogy, course offerings, and practice experience align with current global and environmental health priorities and prepare students for successful careers in global and environmental health. The Chair will be responsible for recruiting and fostering a diverse faculty of internationally recognized experts, each bringing unique contributions to global and environmental health research and practice. The Chair will uphold principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and will actively promote anti-racism and the decolonization of global health. The Chair will be expected to manage the departmental budget effectively and to seek external funding opportunities to achieve its goals and maintain a positive fiscal condition. Finally, as a senior leadership team member in the School of Global Public Health, the Chair will work closely with the Dean, faculty, and administrative leadership to advance the School's shared vision.
