JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Energy Science and Power Systems (ESPS) Division of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking a Power and Energy Systems Chemical Engineer/Chemist to perform basic and applied research in support of ARL’s core mission of supporting our national security via design and development of undersea power and energy systems. The selected candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the analysis, design, development, and demonstration of advanced power systems for underwater and/or other unique applications (including combustion/thermal, electrochemical, and hybrid systems). This position can be filled by either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty. ​ ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You Will:

  • Model, design, fabricate, and test components, subsystems, and integrated systems

  • Evaluate, manufacture, and test energetic materials used in underwater power systems and/or chemical storage of hydrogen or oxygen

  • Execute technical project leadership, interfacing with internal management, program sponsors, and other stakeholders

  • Develop ideas and proposals for potential new programs

    Faculty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years' related experience. A Masters degree or PhD is preferred.

Required Skills

  • The candidate should have a strong technical background with experience in design and analysis of chemical, mechanical, and/or electrical systems

  • Experience with modeling and hands-on testing of materials, subsystems, and systems

  • Comfortable writing white papers/proposals as well as presenting to large groups and sponsors

  • Demonstrated track record of successful project / team leadership

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency with modeling tools for chemical kinetics, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, or other analysis tools

  • Working knowledge of materials related to chemical generation and storage of hydrogen and oxygen

  • Experience with funding acquisition from various agencies, including but not limited to, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and SBIR/STTR
