Community Relations Liaison - Youth Engagement Coordinator – Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities Grant - FT Days

St. Peter’s Heath Partners Capital District Tobacco-Free Communities (CDTFC) is currently accepting applications for a full-time vacancy based in Troy, NY. As part of a team of public health professionals, the Youth Engagement Coordinator will actively recruit, coordinate, and lead tobacco control youth action in Albany, Schenectady, and Rensselaer counties.

As a point person for CDTFC initiatives, the Youth Engagement Coordinator will develop and lead tobacco-control youth action teams (youth ages 13-18) to improve public health outcomes. Specifically, the successful candidate will engage, train, and mobilize youth to be active participants in the policy and community change process through data collection, community and decision maker education, and media engagement.

Position Overview:

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will plan and execute a range of community-based outreach initiatives. In this role, he/she will:

Youth Recruitment:

  • Develop and maintain connections with youth-based organizations and local area schools

  • Provide regular educational presentations to community youth groups and schools on the impact of tobacco marketing, promotion, secondhand smoke exposure, and tobacco product waste and the environment

Youth Retention:

  • Provide training and technical assistance to youth to empower and build their capacity to educate and motivate community members and community leaders

  • Educate on deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry, the health inequities related to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, and how tobacco control policy change can result in a healthier community

  • Increase youth knowledge and skills around public speaking, holding interviews with media, persuasive writing, and leadership skills

  • Conduct Reality Check youth meetings to plan and implement youth-led events for community and decision maker education and opportunities for local media coverage.

  • Participate in the planning and hosting of annual statewide Youth Summit

Infrastructure:

  • Participate in annual meetings with State Legislators

  • Attend regional and statewide meetings/trainings as required by NYSDOH Bureau of Tobacco Control

  • Complete all reporting in a timely and accurate manner

  • Maintain accurate records and permissions for all youth activities

Required qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree; experience working with youth,

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills.

  • Reliable transportation and a valid NYS license,

  • Availability to work an occasional evening and weekend hours.

  • Local travel and infrequent overnight stays.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.

  • Excellent organizational, leadership and relationship building skills,

  • Proficiency with social media.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in public health and tobacco control.

  • Experience with public policy work; and experience working with youth and youth-based organizations.

Location and Logistics

While the position is 40 hours a week, based in Troy, NY on the St. Mary’s campus of Samaritan Hospital, we offer a flexible hybrid work schedule. The position is 100% grant funded.

Pay Range: $25.85 - $32.00

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.

All new employees are required to undergo and pass all applicable state and federally mandated pre-employment screening requirements.
