The Research Foundation for The State University of New York at Stony Brook Research Data Systems Analyst in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of full-time experience in information technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which includes related IT experience working in a large research hospital or academic medical center.

Preferred Qualifications:

Four (4) years of full-time relevant clinical research informatics experience. Experience with REDCap and OnCore. Experience with MYsQL, PostgreSQl or other RDBMS platforms. Experience with data modeling, data architecture, data warehousing, data integration technologies, and/or complex data environments. Experience with JavaScript, Python, PHP, or other scripting languages. Experience with gathering and analysis; direct work in consulting, training, and supporting end-users.


Brief Description of Duties:

The Research Data Systems Analyst leads efforts to provide technical and information systems-related development and support services to research studies and other initiatives as part of Stony Brook University's Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC). Working with diverse, multidisciplinary teams, the incumbent will utilize information architecture and software development best practices to document, analyze, and translate research workflow needs into various technical designs and informatics solutions, toward driving the CTSC's core mission of accelerating innovative clinical research discoveries and their application to patient care, "from bench to bedside." The incumbent will apply biomedical informatics (BMI) technical standards, methodologies, and principles in such areas as data capture, data integration, and data analytics and visualization to advance program needs, objectives, and outcomes. Solutions may include but are not limited to: designing dynamic data capture workflows, building dashboards for data monitoring, debugging interoperability interfaces, within and outside of application development environments. This position involves interfacing with multiple levels of the Stony Brook Medicine enterprise, including clinical/research faculty, regulatory coordinators, biostatisticians, and senior leaders, and will report to the Clinical Research Systems Manager, under the Chief Research Information Officer.

Responsibilities of the Research Data Systems Analyst may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with diverse stakeholders (including leadership and support staff from areas of clinical research, regulatory, business, and research administration) to understand requirements and devise database technology solutions that meet both user needs and best practices.

  • Exercise technical leadership to initiate, carry out and complete successful development projects.

  • Use programming skillset and critical thinking to resolve technical problems and customize solutions, both individually and in collaboration with other team members.

  • Automate repetitive tasks to achieve operational efficiency through the use of scripting, database stored procedures, etc.

  • Develop and maintain extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes to support reporting needs.

  • Proactively monitor data system performance, identifying workflow and technical issues for process improvement or change management.

  • Work with counterparts at surveillance sites to coordinate continuous data quality processes, provide access to the central data repositories, troubleshoot data issues, and develop visualization and dashboards for meeting operational and site performance monitoring requirements.

  • Collaborate with application and systems administrators on the creation and maintenance of documentation, including data dictionaries, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and wiki articles.

  • Provide training, guidance, and support to consumers of data systems and solutions as required.

  • Collaborate with team members on database design and modeling to support and advance the objectives of the CTSC.

  • Work with and report to the research systems manager within Research IT on project-related tasks and communicate potential risks and issues.

  • Scope out new technologies as needed, perform proof of concept testing, and make recommendations to team. Assist with system and application administration of institutional clinical research information systems (CRIS). May provide oversight, mentoring, and cross-training to other analysts on the team.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
