Job Description

Open Rank Tenure-track, 12-month undergraduate and graduate teaching and research/scholarly activity position in the Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources. The proposed employment date is June 1, 2024 or until a successful candidate is identified. This position will serve a critical need in a rapidly growing program in Zoo Animal Care and Management within the Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources at Tarleton State University. The department serves over 450 students in its B.S. and M.S. degrees. A Ph.D. in Animal and Natural Resource Sciences is launching in Fall 2023. This position will be affiliated with and maintain an office at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (FRWC) in Glen Rose, TX. FRWC is a renowned facility accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and dedicated to global wildlife conservation of endangered species. This position will work closely with FRWC staff as a representative of Tarleton State University to promote educational opportunities for students and collaborative research activities.

Essential Functions

Teaching and Service (40%):

Teach graduate and undergraduate courses within their area of expertise in wildlife and natural resources. The applicant will be expected to develop specialty and graduate courses in their area of expertise, and develop, and implement an effective teaching program, using appropriate methodology, technology, and other tools. Courses may be taught at the Stephenville campus, other campuses, or at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Maintain appropriate schedule of office hours for student access and inquiry; Work in partnership with student success personnel on student advising and orientation. Participate in institutional service roles such as but not limited to, college committees, club sponsorship, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.

Research/scholarly activity (40%):

Develop a sustainable, nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in their area of expertise, including but not limited to zoo animal care and management and wildlife and natural resources conservation.

Administration (20%):

This administrative role is to coordinate the affiliation between the Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Provides daily operational leadership; directs, implements, and monitors program goals. Manages staff assigned to the program. Coordinates feedback to and from key administrative and technical team members. Provides dialogue as to the management issues that affect the financial and technical health of the program.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in wildlife science or related field. Experience in zoo animal care and management or captive wild animal management related to global conservation is preferred. Evidence of a sustained, extramurally funded research program.

Assistant Professor

Minimum Requirements

  • Earned doctorate/terminal degree in wildlife science or related field from an accredited institution.

  • Experience in zoo animal care and management or captive wild animal management related to global conservation is preferred.

Associate Professor

Minimum Requirements

  • At least five years in the rank of Assistant Professor and evidence of a sustained, extramurally funded research program.

Administrative Relationships: The position reports to the department head in the Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources at Tarleton State University.
