SVM - Assistant Professor, Associate, Full Professor, Large Animal Medicine and Surgery

St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Assistant/Associate Professor role, in the Large Animal Medicine and Surgery department in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2024.

Job Description

Objective

The faculty of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions

Instructional Activities:

The responsibilities of the position include didactic coursework in large animal medicine (focus on equine or livestock), as well as participation in large animal clinical skills laboratories. Involvement in ambulatory service for the purposes of teaching and providing service to the agricultural community is also desirable. Participation in university academic affairs is expected, as well as contributions of scholarly work in research. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a research program and participate in collaborative research.

The successful applicant should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and a positive attitude toward student enrichment in all areas of academic and practical preparatory coursework.

Supplemental teaching

In addition to teaching in the core courses for the DVM program, faculty may be required to:

  • Support departmental teaching in the graduate program and the pre-veterinary program.

  • Support the Integrated Team Instruction (ITI) delivery of the DVM program.

  • Participate in the professionalism courses.

  • Contribute to the academic advisory system for all students enrolled on the DVM program.

    Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Actively engage in a research topic in a relevant area.

  • Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students.

  • Contribute to curriculum review and innovation.

  • Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department.

  • Active participation in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Veterinary Education

    Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • At least 5 years of experience in large animal practice with a focus on equine or livestock medicine

  • Masters degree or PhD

    Desirable Qualities

  • The successful applicant should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and a positive attitude toward student enrichment in all areas of academic and practical preparatory coursework.

  • Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by an AVMA recognized specialty college or board.

  • Clinical teaching experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • A commitment to the education of veterinary students and animal handlers
