University of Rochester Research Assistant (HRSC 1) in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

This position is for Research Assistant (RA) in the Center for Retina and Brain (CRAB), reporting to Dr. Steve Silverstein, in the Department of Psychiatry. The primary role of the HRSC 1 will be to assist on a study of visual remediation of people with schizophrenia. This includes conducting structured diagnostic interviews and symptom rating interviews, administering a battery of tests of visual functioning, and conducting visual remediation sessions with patients using the software packages chosen for this purpose. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for subject recruitment and scheduling of assessment and treatment sessions, and will prepare materials for the IRB, and maintain and update study databases. The RA will attend the weekly CRAB lab meeting.

RESPONSIBLITLES:

Participant Recruitment

  • Works with Pl to develop, implement and evaluate recruitment strategies. Uses independent judgment and semi-structured diagnostic interviews to identify eligible participants. Conducts informed consent procedures with participants and obtains written consent.

Participant Assessment and Retention

  • Conducts assessments (e.g., visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, contour integration, diagnostic and symptom assessment) with study participants independently. Takes appropriate steps to ensure participants' safety. Provides outreach to study participants to maximize their retention in the project.

Visual remediation

  • Conducts visual remediation sessions, focused on improving contrast sensitivity and contour integration, with individuals or small groups of patients working independently, multiple times per week. Creates patient accounts in the software applications.

Project Management

  • Complete and manage study-related IRB correspondence, including: creating initial submissions, protocol amendments and exceptions; drafting protocols, consent forms, and recruitment materials; reporting protocol deviations and adverse events; and submitting annual continuing reviews of active and inactive studies.

Data Management

  • Works with Pl to set up procedures for developing and maintaining data systems. With guidance from Pl and based on study protocol, ensures the integrity and security of all study data at all times. Directly enters into database by transcribing paper or electronic data. Performs data analysis using analytic software.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, engineering, or biology required

  • 1 year of experience in human subject research coordination or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • General knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel required

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required

  • Knowledge of data analysis software preferred

  • Comfort with running subjects through an OCTA protocol preferred

  • Manual blood pressure measurement preferred

  • Human Subjects Protection Program (HSPP) and NIH' s Good Clinical Practice training prior certification preferred required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 18.89 - $ 26.44 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
