Responsibilities

A postdoctoral research fellow position at Mayo Clinic is open for application. The research fellow will work with Dr. Jun Chen in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences to develop and apply computational and statistical tools/pipelines for analyzing genetic, genomic and metagenomic data . The fellow will have opportunities to interact with principal investigators at Mayo Clinic and is expected to lead both methodological and collaborative projects, develop bioinformatics/biostatistics pipelines, and contribute to manuscripts.

PhD graduates in a quantitative field (e.g. bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistics, genomics, computer science) with strong computational and programming skills are encouraged to apply. Specific qualifications we are looking for include:

(1) Experience in developing computational/statistical methods/tools for biomedical data.

(2) Proficiency in R programming language and Unix/Linux system.

(3) Ability to conduct independent research and write manuscripts.

(4) A good team member with strong presentation and communication skills.

The Department of Quantitative Health Sciences host approximately 300 biostatisticians, Bioinformaticians and Statistical Programming Analysts, and is an ideal place for biostatistics and bioinformatics training.

Dr. Chen is a Professor of Biostatistics and Senior Associate Consultant at Mayo Clinic. His research focuses on computational and statistical genetics, genomics and metagenomics (https://www.mayo.edu/research/faculty/chen-jun-ph-d/bio-20126134) (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=gonDvdwAAAAJ&hl=en). He is well known for his methodology research for microbiome and metagenomics data. He received his Ph.D. in bioinformatics and genomics from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his postdoctoral training in biostatistics from Harvard School of Public Health. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences and the Center of Individualized Medicine at Mayo Clinic since 2014.

A Research Fellow in Bioinformatics/Biostatistics (BST) will have a primary focus in developing software and research techniques and/or tools to analyze and then aid in understanding biological data. Responsiblities and skills required involve computer programming, calculating statistics related to biological information, and mathematics.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.
