This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules. Position Purpose This position provides financial aid counseling to prospective and currently enrolled students, their families, and others, processes financial aid applications, determines eligibility, issues awards, and performs other tasks related to the administration of financial aid programs on the Olympia campus. This position reports to the Director of Financial Aid. Nature and Scope Essential Functions Provide financial aid counseling to students, their families, and others. Maintain counseling load for designated population of students, which includes performing all the necessary processes to evaluate financial aid applications, verify data, award aid, make adjustments to previous award, etc. via automated systems. Manage return of funds process, including participation in Registration and Records tuition appeal review. Administer state financial aid programs. Interpret, apply, and disseminate changes in federal, state, institutional, and external financial aid programs. Maintain a commitment to excellent student-centered service. Review, approve, and deny emergency, short-term loans. Prepare ad hoc reports. Represent the Financial Aid Office during outreach and recruitment events. Other duties as assigned by the Director. Additional Duties Knowledge Skills and Abilities Ability to translate technical and/or complex federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies to external audiences. Ability to accurately verify eligibility data and create/revise award packages on a consistent basis according to federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations. Knowledge of federal methodology calculations, including how to determine Expected Family Contribution/Student Aid Index, calculate need, and apply need and non-need based aid to students' financial aid packages. Strong listening and critical thinking skills to accurately recommend appropriate course of action and explain available options. Excellent customer service skills and ability to foster an inclusive climate that is welcoming and supportive. Proficiency with computer technology, including Microsoft 365 and Banner. Knowledge of FERPA and ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to work effectively via email, phone, and in person. Excellent organizational skills with an extreme attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and perform a variety of tasks and assignments in a timely manner and work under deadline pressure.
