PNC Technology Engineer, IBM i / iSeries / AS/400 engineer in North Annex, United States

This position is primarily based in a location within PNC's footprint. Responsibilities require time in the office or in a field on a regular basis. Some responsibilities can be performed remotely. Additional locations may be considered.

As a Technology Engineer within PNC's Technology organization, you can sit in Pittsburgh PA, Strongsville OH, Phoenix AZ, Birmingham AL or Dallas TX.

Primary Job Requirements:

  • We are seeking an experienced IBM i / iSeries / AS/400 engineer

  • Must have thorough knowledge of IBM i 7R3 and 7R5

  • Must have experience upgrading-in-place LPARs from 7R3 to 7R5

  • Experienced in a Virtual Tape Library solution (DSI preferred)

  • Ability to restore completely an IBM i system from backups using BRMS

  • Must be experienced programming in CL and/or RPG and/or SQL

  • Experience in installation and maintenance of ancillary 3rd party software such as messaging, scheduling, security, and replication software (QEDD)

  • Must be experienced in downloading and applying IBM i PTFs (patches)

  • Must be experienced in downloading and applying IBM Power firmware (Power 10 experience preferred)

  • Must be experienced in patching and upgrading IBM HMCs

  • Must be experienced in BRMS (backups) scheduling, vaulting, and troubleshooting failed backups

  • Experienced in managing IBM DS9500 SAN storage

  • Support of application developers and troubleshooting of system issues as required

  • Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP protocol and ports

  • Experience making applications communicate in a heavily firewalled environment

  • Creation, maintenance and reporting on user profiles; system security

  • Experience with exit point security management software such as Assure Security System Access Manager. Familiarity with securing network protocols, SQL statements, sockets, jobs, etc.

  • Must be willing to work occasional off hours and weekends when required to support business needs

  • Must be willing to participate in a rotating 24x7 on call rotation

Expected Deliverables:

  • Produce a written guides detailing the steps to:

o download and perform IBM i system upgrades (7R3 to 7R5)

o perform complete system restores (bare metal recovery) from BRMS backups

o download and apply IBM i operating system PTFs (patches)

o download and apply HMC major upgrades

o download and apply HMC minor updates

o download and apply IBM System firmware

  • Must be able to produce written guides detailing:

o Human and non-human (service) profile creation and maintenance, including the rules governing passwords, security, etc.

  • Conduct a review of the major in-house programs running at PNC, and produce run books for the following:

o A run book of the programs used for nightly, weekly, monthly and yearly backups

o Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery Failover Procedures

o Other in-house programs

  • Produce a run book for maintenance of the Trust Accounting (TRC) application

  • Other run books as required

  • Program reports detailing human and non-human user profiles who can access each system

o Produce run books detailing the maintenance of the reports

Work Experience

Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree, with 3+ years of relevant / direct industry experience. Certifications are often desired. In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education, job specific certification(s), and experience (including military service) may be considered.
