Position Summary

Columbia University's Wellness Center is home to Columbia's Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Institute called 'InTOuCH.' This program recruits trusted members of churches from West and Central Harlem to complete an 8-week, certified CHW training curriculum. The Community Health Worker (CHW) Champion will be responsible for supporting the CHURCH team in increasing access to colorectal screening among African American church members. They will support recruitment efforts, partnerships with churches, and administration of screening events and hold motivational interviewing sessions.

Responsibilities

Will perform studies on patients of all age groups, including neonates, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations. Will also participate in recording studies according to approved clinical research protocols as necessary. The holder of this position should provide technically excellent Sleep/EEG testing and procedures in a fiscally sound and productive manner.

Will be responsible for performing all neurophysiology laboratory activities. This includes troubleshooting of equipment problems, maintenance of equipment and supplies in working order, and working with information technology at Columbia University, Department of Neurology, NYP, and vendors as needed. The coordinator will have a strong information technology understanding of systems software and troubleshooting issues.

Responsibilities will include:

The CHW will work directly with church leadership, community health workers, and faculty from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. They will support the planning and implementation of church-based colorectal cancer screening events in NYC; offering colorectal cancer screening referrals and providing Motivational Interviewing to community members. Works closely with the program coordinator, assisting in organizing monthly church-based health screening events to recruit participants for the study. Work closely with the CHW champion and program coordinator, in the implementation of the study.
  • Complete Orientation and Initial Training
  • Complete pre and post-training knowledge and self-efficacy measures
  • Complete booster training sessions
  • Participate in Focus Groups at end of the study
  • Organize and participate in community kick-off and screening events
  • Identify and recruit eligible church congregants to participate in the colorectal cancer screening
  • Supporting research participants as they move through the study
  • Delivering motivational interviewing sessions or regular counseling with colorectal cancer health resources
  • Provide colorectal cancer screening referrals
  • Make follow-up phone calls to eligible participants to schedule 6 m and 12 m screening
  • Report to the CHW champion and program coordinator on a regular basis

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

* Graduate of Columbia's certified CHW Training Institute called 'InTOuCH'
* Be in good standing with ZMBBI Wellness Center leaders as a Community Health Worker
* Be an active member of a local church in NYC
* Conducted at least one prior church-based health screening event
* Knowledge of health disparities research
* Familiar with Institutional Review board protocols, databases, etc.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word
* Strong communication skills
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple diverse projects
* Flexibility in hours (i.e., will work some evenings and at least 1 Saturday / month)
* Experience developing, distributing, and evaluating research studies
