Position Summary

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences, in Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health seeks to fill a Researcher- Variable Hours Officer position as part of a research project entitled, "Marriage, Orthodoxy, and a Vision of Empowerment" (MOVE). MOVE is collecting qualitative data to describe the range of marital experiences of Orthodox or formerly Orthodox Individuals in New York and will analyze that data to develop a taxonomy of experiences, understand how those experiences are socially patterned, and identify modifiable dimensions of the social context that can lead to strategies to increase marital, sexual, and reproductive self-determination. The MOVE research is being carried out by a team of Columbia researchers, in collaboration with leadership and staff at Unchained at Last, which is providing funding for the project.

Columbia University research study on shidduchim, marriage, intimacy, and reproduction seeks English speaking individuals to help with recruitment of frum people who were married in New York City or New York State. We are looking for someone who is frum, knows people from multiple frum communities (Haredi, Chasidish, Litvish, Chabad, Yeshivish, Satmar) who currently or have ever lived in New York City or the greater New York area (Rockland County, New Jersey). The VHO's responsibilities will include helping recruit female-identified eligible participants and meeting regularly with the Principal Investigator and Project Manager. This is a part-time position requiring approximately 3 hours/week (the number of hours will depend). Much of the work will be done on a semi-flexible schedule, based on participant and researcher availability; the position does require availability to meet regularly with the Principal Investigator and Project Manager, with meetings scheduled at a mutually convenient time. The work will be conducted in a hybrid format.

Responsibilities

The variable hours officer, who will work approximately 60 hours total on MOVE, will:

Help develop and implement a strategy to recruit female-identified individuals for in-depth interviews and focus groups- 75%
Participate in regular supervision meetings with Dr. Hirsch and the project manager- 15%
Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested- 10%

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications

Strong English (reading and writing)

Willingness to complete short (paid) training in research ethics

Availability 2-3 hours/ week February-June
Computer literacy and access to a computer
Lived experience or substantial familiarity with Haredi, Yeshivish, Litvish, Chabad, or other observant Jewish communities in the greater New York area

Other Requirements

Strong written and communication skills

Helpful but not required:
Fluent in Yiddish
