Position Summary

A Technician B position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ulrich Hengst at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In the Hengst laboratory we are investigating the mechanism underlying the development of Alzheimer's disease. We use a combination of primary neuron culture, human tissue samples, and transgenic animal approaches to understand the role of locally synthesized transcription factors in disease progression. The position will involve aiding research on this specific project and other projects in the lab.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory and cell culture work as well as work with mice or rats.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment (incubator, water bath, etc.).
  • Maintain lab supplies, support the everyday running of the lab, and order reagents and supplies.
  • Arrange repairs and calibrations with outside vendors.
  • Learn and complete standard laboratory protocols; order, receive and stock laboratory supplies.
  • Assist with data analysis and presentation; and schedule attendance at lab meetings.
  • Handle, breed, and genotype laboratory animals.
  • Following all standard operating procedures outlined by Columbia EH&S.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related science or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants with previous experience in laboratory protocols such as cell culture, western blot, southern blot, microscopy, and mouse work are preferred.

  • Applications should also be skilled in: timeless, flexibility, cleanliness, record-keeping, communication by phone and email, teamwork, and troubleshooting.
