This opportunity to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at the rank of Senior Staff Associate II is an exciting one. The Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Hospital Medicine and Palliative Care (PCCHM) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center has an immediate opening for a Sr. Staff Associate II functioning as a Data Scientist to lead development and implementation of data-driven pediatric clinical care innovations. PCCHM is strengthening its commitment to being a learning health system and is looking to further integrate cutting edge research with high quality patient care by linking multi-omics approaches with electronic health records.

The successful candidate will have a track record of creativity and applying data-driven solutions in biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, hospital medicine or critical care medicine. The successful candidate will be responsible for co-leading all aspects of the research program. This will necessitate a thorough understanding of research methodology; ability to assemble background information; technical skills to extract and link data from multiple sources; and ability to design and perform complex analyses on large datasets using a variety of software packages. The successful candidate will also be responsible for translating and presenting computational output into tables and figures; developing clinical decision support algorithms; and archiving code for later retrieval and use. The successful candidate will have familiarity with time series data, natural language processing, EHR integration, machine learning (Python, R, or machine learning services on AWS and Azure), and complex SQL queries. Knowledge of healthcare terminology is preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively to develop research questions into hypothesis-driven, answerable, data-based experiments
  • Link and maintain data from multiple sources, including clinical, quality, and multi-omic repositories
  • Analyze data from said sources, decant complex interim and final results into multiple formats, present findings in a way that is understandable to a variety of pediatric clinicians and researchers, including at division and departmental conferences
  • Develop and maintain software repository in support of a variety of research projects, and develop protocols for future research and data analysis
  • Provide data for clinical informaticians to support proposed improvements to the electronic health record software


  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4 years of experience;

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS, MA, or equivalent in a quantitative field such as Biomedical Informatics, Statistics, Genetics, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or a related field of study.
  • Strong communications and oral presentation skills.
  • Strong scientific writing skills and familiarity with grant writing
