Columbia University Senior Financial Analyst in New York, New York

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Manager of Finance (the “Manager”) of the Clinical Trials Office (the “CTO”) of Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (“VP&S”) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (“CUIMC”), the Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for overseeing the financial management of industry sponsored clinical trials at P&S on behalf of the research community.

The CTO, which is operated jointly with the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (“NYPH”) assists investigators and academic/research staff in developing clinical trials at P&S and provides administrative resources and infrastructure to build and sustain clinical trials research at P&S.


The responsibilities of the Senior Financial Analyst include, but are not limited to:

  • Creation of study accounts in ARC.

  • Ensure efficient collection of payments from industry sponsors.

  • Creation, distribution, and follow-up of sponsor invoices on behalf of study teams.

  • Research and resolve study team and sponsor financial issues.

  • Interpreting and analyzing study account activity.

  • Regular reconciliation and monitoring of study activity for services rendered by study team and payments received from sponsor.

  • Demonstrate competency and proficiency in the StudyManager/CTMS system for the financial process.

  • Reconciling study accounts and finalizing accounts receivable balances with study team and industry sponsors.

  • Aid in generating reports for post award team under the supervision of the Director.

  • Efficiently identify issues through data analysis and implement workable solutions.

  • Provide support to CTO leadership when liaising with central finance offices of the University.

  • Develop and implement training programs for new hires.

  • Creation and processing of Internal Transfer journal entry for CTO business processes including the Spanish Translation Center.

  • Creation and processing of General Ledger journal entry for CTO business processes including CTO fund allocations.

  • Provide guidance and maintain CTO processes for the project deactivation process.

  • Maintain the transfer of funds for IN projects, interpreting FDS reports to ensure all Columbia University standard operating procedures are followed.

  • Recording project deactivation activity and communicating requests to Columbia University finance offices.

  • Provide support of special projects as assigned by CTO leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus 4 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of the financial and business aspects of clinical research.

  • Demonstrable ability to collaborate with partners in research (including government, foundation and industry sponsors), investigators and research staff.

  • Expert knowledge of analysis of financial data and preparation of budgets and financial reports.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Strong computer skills required, including, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Access, and SharePoint
