The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Senior Executive Director, Communication & Creatives Services [SED] is the senior leader responsible for developing and directing the Communication strategies, process and creative direction for the School of Professional Studies (SPS), the degree and non-degree programs, as well as central units within the school. As the video and digital media needs of The School of Professional Studies increase in volume and complexity, the Senior Executive Director will ensure we have a cohesive communications strategy that meets the needs of the diverse program portfolio while supporting other communication campaigns as directed by the Dean.
The SED will play a lead role in providing creative input into the annual Communications Strategic Plan for the school in collaboration with school- and university-wide stakeholders. The SED will utilize their expertise in architecting communication campaigns, leading multi-media creative teams, project management, story development, user interface design, and events to deliver innovative and compelling campaigns that drive target audience engagement and response, with measurable and tangible results. The incumbent will oversee all media, web and event development and execution in service of stakeholders.
The incumbent will be responsible for reviewing the current teams and services provided to assess efficacy of efforts and develop a full service creative support unit that meets the needs of the school’s departments and divisions.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction to the communications, media production, events, and website design teams
Lead efforts in defining execution strategies to meet targeted goals and reporting on measurable issues associated with audiences and initiatives
Provide services to all SPS stakeholders
Continually assess effectiveness and impact of initiatives
Manage implementation of all creative elements for the school’s initiatives
Lead teams including Website & Design, Communications, Media Production, and Events
Establish and monitor staff performance, development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals
Ensure team members are assigned optimally to projects that will bring best-in-class outcomes
Create and nurture relationships with university administrators, partner schools, and consultants
Represent the organization with Columbia University with regard to communications, particularly when interfacing with the communications department of other schools, centers and institutes
Oversee project work plan and final approvals process
Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of activities in achieving targeted goals
Ensure organizational communication and brand consistency across all SPS materials and communications including all digital and social media presence
Determine strategies for public relations efforts
Plan, direct and oversee public relations and information programs designed to meet the School’s goals by deciding on content and determining the extent and parameters of public relations efforts needed for particular circumstances and subject matters
Identify and manage public relations consultants
Performs other duties and projects, as necessary
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree is usually required or strongly desirable
7 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree preferred
At least 10+ years of experience directing communications campaigns for an established not for profit organization; demonstrated talent for high-caliber creative concept development and persuasive writing
Events productions experience preferred
Experience in creative department start-up and development with in-house marketing background
Other Requirements
Outstanding demonstrated talent and strength in print and web design capabilities for integrated campaigns
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Exceptional attention to detail, strong organization and time management skills, and the ability to perform non-routine work with changing priorities
Ability to work independently as well as in teams
Demonstrated ability in project management and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Experience in managing, motivating, and leading a creative team from concept to completion of projects and initiatives
Significant experience working with vendors, consultants, and agencies that serve in partnership and support roles to extend and/or accelerate internal resources and capabilities
Familiarity with utilizing results from market research and institutional research to make data based decisions
