Position Summary

The Zuckerman Institute is searching for a full-time Scientific Multimedia Producer to join its Communications team. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented science communicator/visual storyteller with a breadth of expertise in technology, journalism and digital media.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Scientific Multimedia Producer drives public understanding of neuroscience and online engagement to promote the extraordinary research at the Zuckerman Institute. The incumbent will develop compelling videos, infographics and other digital and print content to explore and explain scientific discoveries. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of production, from conception to execution, and bring creativity, energy and innovation in storytelling. Must have a demonstrated ability and desire to convey complex scientific information to non-expert audiences.


  • Identify, develop, write/produce and promote dynamic videos/multimedia stories to complement web articles and illustrate complex scientific concepts.

  • Develop and write compelling news and feature stories about the research and scientific programming at the Institute for a range of internal and external audiences. Pitch and report stories with clarity, veracity and editorial sophistication for a science-curious public.

  • Plan and produce shareable content for social media that incorporates SEO expertise and strong editorial judgment.

  • Curate and manage the website, bringing an imaginative and strategic vision to maximize our impact on various digital platforms. The development of quantitative and qualitative strategies to assess targeted audience growth and engagement will be an important aspect of the position.

  • Multi-camera filming, video editing, and animation skills.

  • Maintain digital asset management database, as well as video production equipment.

  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with Columbia faculty (including Nobel laureates), administration and colleagues across the university.

  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and a minimum of four years of related experience is required. An in-depth understanding of neuroscienceis essential.Please submit two writing samples and a link to a multimedia story in which you played a substantive editorialrole and describe that role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees in journalism, science journalism, the sciences and/or graphic design highly desired. Working knowledge of content management systems such as Drupal is preferred.

Other Requirements

Exercises keen news judgment and understanding of compelling news stories of broad interest. Strong reporting, interviewing and storytelling skills. Must possess expertise in framing stories for different audiences and a sophisticated understanding of science as it relates to contemporary issues and debates. Exceptional attention to editorial detail. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, a sense of humor and a commitment to teamwork. Must be flexible, organized and capable of performing multiple tasks.
