The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Postdoctoral Research Scientist in New York, New York

A research position at the level of Postdoctoral Research Scientist is available at the Center for Radiological Research (CRR.columbia.edu) at Columbia University, to join a team developing biological assays for the rapid assessment of radiation exposure. Biodosimetry enables determining whether an individual has been incidentally or intentionally exposed to radiation, either in the context of triage following a mass radiological event or for identifying individuals who have come in contact with nuclear material.

Part of the work will involve working with our academic and industrial partners to irradiate and test samples using novel biodosimetry approaches, developed by them, enabling improved quantification of ionizing radiation exposures from samples that can be collected non-invasively (hair and skin scrapings) or minimally invasively (blood).

The position would also involve development of new assays or refinement of existing assays based on microscopy, cytogenetics or -omics using a diverse set of samples (hair, skin wipes, blood, urine, or other biofluids).

Qualified candidates should ideally have experience handling both mice and mammalian cells as well as having an interest in biomarker discovery, detection, and characterization Experience with standard cytogenetic techniques and immunocytochemical analyses using fluorescent image analysis techniques or with -omics based analyses would be advantageous although full training will be provided for new assay techniques. The team is highly multidisciplinary of molecular and cell biologists, cytogeneticists, physicists, and biostatisticians, so good communication skills are a must.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in any of the following: Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Physiology, Radiobiology, or a related field. Experience in working in research institutions conducting scientific investigations.
