The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Postdoctoral Research Scientist in New York, New York

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences is actively seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist. This is a paid, full-time position with a 1-year fixed duration and a possible 2-3 year extension. The candidate will serve as a fulltime Postdoctoral Scientist working with Dr. Annie Nigra at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Nigra's team conducts justice-oriented research on US drinking water regulations and exposures, metal exposures, chronic disease, and maternal and infant health, leveraging collaborations with several large NIH-funded cohorts. Examples of recent work by Dr. Nigra's group include analyses of injustices in public drinking water contaminants (,); advances in water epidemiology methods (); and evaluations of the impact of federal drinking water regulatory changes (). Dr. Nigra is committed to providing a training experience that develops excellent research skills, results in high-quality deliverables, and supports the career goals of each team member.

Role and duties:

This role will offer the opportunity to 1) lead drinking water epidemiology and justice analyses in the US, especially those relevant for maternal health, infant health, and cardiovascular disease, 2) gain further experience in spatial modeling, drinking water epidemiology, and environmental epidemiology broadly, 3) gain experience mentoring and leading other team members (including graduate students), and 4) gain experience preparing competitive grant applications.

The Scholar will be responsible for leading the data analysis and manuscript preparation for several research projects under the direction of Dr. Nigra. The Scholar will also supervise other members of Dr. Nigra's team, providing mentorship, technical support, and guidance for on-going projects and analyses. The Scholar will be expected to ultimately prepare and submit several publications for peer review and to present their research both internally and externally. Research topics include those related to public water epidemiology, environmental justice, metals, maternal and infant health, cardiovascular disease, and health equity. The Scholar will also have the opportunity to develop independent projects within the research portfolio.

Training and mentorship:

The Scholar will receive training in supervising and leading analyses and manuscripts, and in developing scientific projects under the overall supervision of Dr. Nigra. Dr. Nigra will work with the trainee to identify and create opportunities for the candidate toward their professional goals. For example, the Scholar will be encouraged and supported in submitting competitive applications for independent funding (e.g. K awards and other funding mechanisms) as appropriate in the second year. Support for professional development (e.g. workshops, trainings) will also be supported.

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD degree in a epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, data science, or a related field.

The position requires proficiency in R, prior research experience, and first author publications. Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in research intersecting epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, and social epidemiology is preferred. Preference will be given to an individual with specific research experience or interests in water epidemiology, environmental justice, US drinking water policy, cardiovascular disease, or maternal/infant health.
