The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Open Rank: Staff Associate I, Staff Associate II, or Staff Associate III in New York, New York

The Department of Neurology is currently seeking multiple applicants for a Staff Associate I, Staff Associate II, and/or Staff Associate III in various divisions within the Department of Neurology.

The Staff Associate will handle administrative issues for the PI, ordering supplies and managing the budget; manage inventory of samples or data (i.e., tissue, core, MRIs, etc.); ensure that equipment or machinery is operating and maintained properly; supervise students; work with study participants, including recruitment and interviewing, and reimbursements; may be involved in tissue sampling, such as taking blood; coordinate meetings or events; assist with the preparation of materials for publications, funding, or compliance; manage scheduling under the PI's direction to ensure that deadlines are met; and coordinate and work with external or partner organizations.

Specific responsibilities and duties will be as follow for each position title and grade (Staff Associate I, Staff Associate II, and Staff Associate III):

  1. Functional Knowledge - For SA1: Knowledge of the research subject and scientific methods of analysis; For SA2: Knowledge of the research subject specifically within own function on the team; For SA3 - Knowledge of the research subject and understanding of how functions inter-relate and support the broader research; considered specialist within own function.
  2. Problem Solving - For SA1: Utilizes analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines, protocols, and procedures. For SA2: Solves problems in moderately complex situations, analyzing possible solutions based on education and experience using judgment and precedent. For SA3: Utilizes strong analytical skills to solve complex problems; exercises developed judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information.
  3. Decision Making/Autonomy - For SA1: Works within guidelines to carry out assigned duties in the design of apparatus, the adaptation of relevant technology to the needs of a project, the conduct of specific experiments, and the analysis of data. For SA2: Carries out research projects with limited PI supervision both collaboratively and independently. For SA3: Works under minimal supervision on complex assignments that require a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.
  4. Technical Expertise - For SA1: Ability to operate and maintain equipment, computers, software programs and research tools in support of the project. For SA2: Operates and maintains equipment, computers, software programs and research tools in support of the project. For SA3: Broad understanding of research techniques, software and instruments used in project.
  5. Communication - For SA1: Shares information and confirmation of data. For SA2: Summarizes and explains information to others. May contribute to publications. For SA3: Ability to translate information to general terms and help others understand impact of the information; assists PI in preparation of publications, including funding proposals, manuscripts and other research-oriented documentation.

Minimum qualification to be considered for:

  1. Staff Associate I: Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4 years experience preferred.
  2. Staff Associate II: Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4 years recommended.
  3. Staff Associate III: Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4-6 years experience.
