Position Summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Department of Pathology and Cell Biology invites applications for a Laboratory Coordinator position. The incumbent would serve as a Coordinator for In Vivo drug screening research in mouse models of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) as part of the newly-created Project ALS Therapeutics Core at Columbia.

The Laboratory Coordinator will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Researching new ALS mouse models and new histology or behavioral techniques of interest to the Therapeutics Core

  • Presenting research at regular meetings

  • Keeping detailed digital records of all experiments

  • Coordinating repairs of essential machinery

  • Keeping inventory and ordering supplies needed for experiments


  • Administering research compounds to ALS mice (30%)

  • Analyzing behavioral measures in ALS mice (30%)

  • Overseeing other research technicians involved in each experiment (20%)

  • Coordinating mouse breeding and husbandry to achieve appropriate mouse numbers for ongoing experiments (10%)

  • Collecting and analyzing tissue from ALS mice (10%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus two years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong background in data analysis and statistics.

  • Experience with data analysis software such as Prism, SPSS, R, etc.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Other Requirements

  • Experience in rodent handling, husbandry, and dissection.

  • Experience in tissue processing, histology and immunocytochemistry.

  • Experience with basic epifluorescent microscopy.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
