The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Faculty All Ranks - Clinical: Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor; in New York, New York

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VCPS), ColumbiaDoctors (CD) and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) have developed an exciting Primary Care Program (PCP) based in critical geographies across the New York City metropolitan region. The operational leader of this PCP is the senior medical director for primary care (SMDPC). The SMDPC is intended to be a collaborative and transformational leader reaching across Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and NYPH to coordinate strategic objectives related to the PCP.

The Senior Medical Director, Primary Care will report to Dr James McKiernan MD, Chief Executive Officer of ColumbiaDoctors and Senior Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons; and Laureen Hill, MD, MBA, Group Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, New York-Presbyterian-Columbia Division

The SMDPC's primary responsibility is to lead the existing five ambulatory practices, retain the existing faculty and grow the number of primary care facilities and faculty in the CUIMC/CD system consistent with strategic goals through a combination of acquisitions and building of new practices. Physician recruitment and retention is a major focus of the position. The SMDPC will promote PCP with community providers and leaders, donors, and other pertinent external entities. The SMDPC will mentor, recruit early career faculty and support career development across all faculty in this initiative.

The SMDPC will advocate for balancing the clinical, operational and the strategic mission of the PCP. The SMDPC will promote improved clinical operations, efficient and effective use of technology, align resources and apply human talent to the evolving institutional strategies.

External Activities

  • Works effectively with the leadership of NYPH, CUIMC and other mission critical institutions as appropriate.
  • Serves as the leader in guiding the PCP faculty in service to patients and their clinical partnership with faculty of other divisions and departments. Exhibits the ability to build productive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the culture, needs, and aspirations of the communities served.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expanding the team of primary care physicians and support staff to serve the metropolitan area.
  • Developing strategy for primary care expansion in collaboration with existing NYPH primary care practices.
  • Working with the CU Nursing School and College of Dental Medicine to build contemporary and collaborative models.
  • Establishing external presence and growing the "brand" of the Columbia PCP within the region, with payers, and employers.
  • Working with ACO, IPA, and managed care contracting group to develop a cohesive strategy to thrive in "value-based" payment systems.
  • Maintaining a primary care practice of 10-20 hours a week as part of the PCP.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board certification in pediatrics, family medicine, and/or internal medicine.
  • Medical licensure in the State of New York.
  • A minimum of 5 years practicing medicine in a primary care specialty and 2 years of direct primary care program management experience.
  • Strong financial management, budgeting, reporting, and analytical skills required.Experience with electronic health records required; familiarity with Epic including Reporting Workbench highly preferred.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of health care funding, value-based contracting, and population health management.
  • Assures the highest standards of healthcare delivery and outcomes while ensuring a constant patient focus.
  • Exhibits a style that fosters and supports change and innovation, with an ability to delegate yet maintain overall control and to set high standards.
  • Exhibits self-awareness, humility, and empathy in his/her interactions with others.
  • Demonstrates the courage to act on convictions after adequate communication and gathering of facts and input.
