Advertised Summary Job Description Reporting to the Deputy Controller, the Executive Director has high-level responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of the University's financial data and reporting. The Executive Director is responsible for the management of the financial reporting and financial operations teams within the Controller's Office, and is responsible for setting annual objectives for the teams including procedure and process improvements, customer service standards, and integration with other Finance functions to support the needs of the University. The Executive Director manages a staff of approximately ten people.

Financial Reporting

The Financial Reporting team is responsible for preparation of the University's financial statements, including the annual financial statements and other audited statements. The team prepares quarterly financial reports and variance analysis for Senior Management and the Trustees of the University. The Executive Director is responsible for the integrity of all financial reports, supporting schedules, and adjustments. In addition, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the preparation of the various other compliance reports.

Integral to this function is the management of financial information flowing into the general ledger system (ARC: Accounting and Reporting at Columbia) from sources all over the University and compiling it into external and internal financial reports. The Executive Director is responsible for identifying opportunities for process improvement and overseeing the streamlining of this information flow and working with the Finance Information Systems team to facilitate all levels of financial reporting.

The Executive Director is responsible for managing internal and external relationships related to University financial reporting and their related operation. This includes coordinating with external auditors on audit timetables and audit requests, as well as communicating with departments University-wide regarding financial reporting deadlines and requirements. In addition, the Executive Director coordinates with internal stakeholders such as Sponsored Projects Finance, the Tax Department, and the Office of Management and Budget on the development of reporting deadlines and various other financial reporting activities.

Financial Operations ? Processing

The Financial Operations team is responsible for the overall day-to-day maintenance of the Chart of Accounts in ARC, ensuring automates processes execute properly and resolving system processing issues as they arise. The team is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the financial data entered into the system, as well as supporting the financial reporting operations.

The Executive Director is responsible for determining system requirements and spending significant time with the Finance Information Systems team to manage, develop, and implement solutions for system enhancements and corrective actions.

Financial Operations ? Cash

The Financial Operations ? Cash team is responsible for cash reconciliations and petty cash accounting. The team is also responsible for collecting and reviewing international and domestic bank account reconciliations prepared by University departments.

The Executive Director is responsible for identifying opportunities for process improvement and overseeing the streamlining of this information flow and working with the Finance Information Systems team to facilitate all levels of cash accounting and reporting functions.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or Finance, plus a minimum of eight years related experience required;

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant CPA required; Must be detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of University administrators, characterized by strong consensus building and relationship building skills, essential. Strong organizational skills required. Supervisory experience required. In addition, the successful candidate must be able to work well with all levels of management, both internally and externally, be flexible in nature, and have sound judgment with an open and collaborative style. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.

Special Instructions

Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree desireable. Public accounting experience preferred. Experience in a fund accounting environment preferred. Knowledge of current FASB and AICPA disclosure and presentation issues a plus.
