Advertised Summary Job Description The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Columbia University Medical Center was established by the University in January 2015 with the goal of creating a genetics environment that offers the benefits of scale and the expertise that will facilitate the integration of genomic analysis across the entire Columbia University community. Towards this goal we are looking for an experienced and dedicated individual to act as our Director of Genomic and Scientific Operations to direct the day-to-day technical and administrative operations of the High Throughput Sequencing Core (HTS).
Reporting to the Director of Genomics, the incumbent will assume a leadership role establishing policies regarding all aspects of HTS operations and will be responsible for the implementation of those policies. Our HTS operations include sequencing performed for both research and clinical purposes.
-Oversee technical operations in order to meet the financial, academic, research goals and strategic initiatives of the Institute.
-Manage throughput within the core including prioritization and timely completion of work
-Supervise the work of several research technicians and other staff assigned to the operation of the HTS including but not limited to establishing and scheduling all work assignments, monitoring the performance of all HTS personnel, and periodically reviewing that performance with each individual.
-With the Department Administrator, develop and maintain appropriate billing rates for HTS services and update and maintain the menu of services offered by the facility
-Establish close working relationships with department chairs, center/institute directors and their administrators to support the Institute's strategic goals, particularly with regard to building strong ties with academic units and supporting jointly appointed faculty.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Requires a bachelor's degree in biological sciences or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant -Seven years of progressive scientific responsibility at a managerial level required, preferably in an academic health center.
-Effective leadership and organizational skills.
-Proven ability to manage and lead staff in a changing environment.
-Knowledge and experience with complex information and computer systems,
-Understanding of the evolving academic science marketplace
-Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students; experienced in the supervision of administrative and support staff personnel.
-Ability to provide initiative, judgment and creativity in the resolution of complex problems
-Effective communication/presentation skills, and a proven track record of forming collaborative and effective working relationships with physicians and administrative leaders.
-Ability to establish realistic and achievable priorities and the ability to lead staff to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
Preferred Qualifications PhD in biological sciences degree or equivalent in education and experience plus five years of related experience.
