Advertised Summary Job Description The Columbia University Medical Center Department of Neurology at New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) seeks an experienced registered nurse, Clinical Coordinator III-RN, to work with SMA patients in the Neurology outpatient practice. The Department of Pediatric/Adult Neurology oversees clinical care for children and adults with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Working under the supervision of Michio Hirano, the Medical Director and Division Chief in the SMA Pediatric Neurology Division and neurologists, the Clinical Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination and management of the Spinraza treatment program for SMA. The Clinical Coordinator will function within both the Pediatric Neurology/Adult and NYP Operations teams, while serving as a liaison to patients, families and physicians.

Job Duties:

-Schedule and coordinate Spinraza treatments and track patient dosing.

-Initiates Biogen Start Forms with treating providers and patients' families. Submits prescription and supporting medical documentation to the pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

-Work in parallel with Columbia University and NYPH staff to financially clear Spinraza treatments and ensure case reimbursement for the hospital and physician(s). The financial clearance responsibilities include but are not limited to:

-Determine sponsorship/insurance coverage for the treatment

-Obtain prior authorization for the treatment

-Establish with the payer a justification/medical necessity determination

-Determine/communicate out-of-pocket expenses to the patient

-Connect patient with NYPH financial counseling resources as needed

-Coordinates peer to peer evaluations when necessary

-Coordinate receipt of drug with dispensing pharmacy where applicable. Track drug deliveries and patient dosing. Liaise with NYP Pharmacy when appropriate. Update NYP and CU staff with status.

-Responsible person to update, track, and maintain clinical and insurance information in Spinraza patient database. Responsible for tracking dosing on patients in each dosing cohort and adhering to dosing window.

-Monitors and procures patient supplies. Ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are on hand and in working order for day/s of patient dosing.

-Document plan of care, preparation, and implementation of treatment plans in appropriate electronic medical record system/s.

-Assist NP and MD during clinic and/or medical procedure. Activities include, but are not limited to:

-Review and prepare labs for MD

-Monitor patient and perform vital signs during procedure

-Maintain clinical standards for treatment room and patient care areas.

-Provides patient education and emotional support. Meets with families during clinics. Organizes pre-dose evaluation on clinic days. Populate appropriate databases.

-Participates in SMA Spinraza-related treatment planning meetings, participate in weekly team meeting.

-Other related duties as assigned/required.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus five years of related experience.

Must have Pediatric BCLS certification and knowledge of emergency policies and procedures.

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant The candidate should be highly motivated, interested in neuromuscular disease, have excellent interpersonal skills. We are looking for someone who can establish good rapport with children and families as well as the clinical, research, and administrative teams. We emphasize the importance of team unity as central to our success. Computer skills are required including proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Access, and MS PowerPoint.
