Position Summary/Description:

The Accountant II will report to the Center Administrator and assist in all facets of research accounting at UNC . They will collaborate directly with various groups and individuals across the university to communicate financial objectives and outcomes effectively. This role will function as a key resource in budgetary accounting and will be tasked with managing and enhancing research-specific billing and invoicing processes in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team, aiming to continually improve efficiency and resource utilization.

Responsibilities include conducting audits and analyses, collaborating with both internal and external partners to ensure the accuracy of research budgets, revenue, and expenses. The Accountant II will provide guidance on financial policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiencies. Additionally, they will develop fiscal reports, consolidating and summarizing operational data from various sources to support financial reporting, cost accounting, budgeting, and procurement activities.

This role is crucial in providing accurate and timely internal management information and financial reports for all financial activities associated with CGIBD . This includes preparing routine or standard reports related to faculty accounts and performing data entry accounting tasks such as posting to account ledgers, reconciling accounts, and verifying entries. They will work with financial accounts of moderate variety and complexity, ensuring accounting controls are maintained through the development and advocacy of policies and procedures.

Furthermore, the Accountant II will supply financial information to management through research and analysis of accounting data, recommending appropriate financial actions based on available options. They will also offer guidance to others on accounting matters, ensuring the integrity of functions and interpreting policies, rules, and regulations to ensure proper accounting practices are followed.

Education and Experience:

Four-year degree in accounting or finance, experience with PeopleSoft is a plus.

Knowledge of and experience with accounting policies and procedures in regard to all types of accounting including but, not limited to: contracts and grants, foundations, state and overhead accounts.

Knowledge of funding program specifics and accounting principles and their application to cost, governmental accounting and non-governmental accounting. Experience with post-award grant accounting with the ability to identify substantive issues, and thoroughly and accurately research and analyze them to anticipate budgetary adjustments.
