The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) has a full-time opportunity for an experienced Research Assistant to support the research being conducted at Hennepin Healthcare's HCMC inthe department of Integrated Medicine. Interest and background in complementary and integrative health is desired. This position will be a blend of telework and an onsite presence on the HCMC campus in downtown Minneapolis, MN. Project Abstracts: Opioids have historically been used to address chronic pain regardless of underlying cause or severity. While opioids may offer short term pain relief, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that opioid treatment provides prolonged benefits to individuals with chronic pain. Minnesotans have suffered tremendously from the opioid epidemic, with MDH data from 2021 indicating a 35% increase in the total number of overdose deaths involving opioids since 2020. This number of deaths has more than doubled since 2019 with American Indian Minnesotans ten times and Black Minnesotans more than three times as likely to die from a drug overdose than white Minnesotans. Rural counties throughout MN have some of the highest overdose rates. Given the parallel crises of chronic pain and opioid misuse, there is a need to shift our approach toward pain management and address social drivers of health. There is strong evidence for the use of integrative mind/body therapies and Non-Pharmacological Pan Care (NPPC) strategies for people with OUD and/or chronic pain, with better outcomes and less harmful side effects than opioids.
