Assistant Research Professor for Aircraft Center for Earth Studies

The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School is soliciting applications for a new research professorship position. The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) is a new endowed state-of-the-art aerospace center overseeing a Helicopter Observation Platform, multiple research vessels, including a flying electric boat, and a drone fleet serving Florida and the United States. ACES focuses on advanced remote sensing and aeronautical research platform technology development with an ambitious strategic plan. ACES is supported by an endowment, several ongoing multimillion-dollar NASA, National Geographic, and other grants. With this hire, we are looking to create an aerospace center of excellence focusing on game-changing technical advances to better understand and conserve Earth. ACES is led by Dr. Ved Chirayath, the Vetlesen Professor of Earth Sciences, Mechanical, & Aerospace Engineering, National Geographic Explorer, and former NASA LAS director.

We are seeking talented and mission-driven researchers to join the ACES team and work with Dr. Chirayath to lead a recently-completed ACES Drone Center to continue developing next-generation sensing technologies, airborne and spaceborne instruments, and sensing aircraft and research platforms. Candidates with a vision to develop and fabricate novel airborne systems, such as solarpowered fixed-wing electric drones for ocean mapping missions are encouraged to apply. This research professorship position comes with core funding support from the ACES endowment and is further supported by several ongoing multi-year grants and projects. ACES Drone Center support includes additional discretionary equipment support for fabricating drones in-house, a newly remodeled drone lab, and several office spaces. Candidates will pursue research interests aligned with ACES, collaborate and enable research with fellow Rosenstiel scientists, and serve as principal or coinvestigators on grants. Note, this is not a tenure-track position, but does have dedicated endowment support. This research professorship includes a teaching expectation of a practical research-focused course, designed with the ACES team, to advance the University of Miami’s goals to train the next generation of earth science focused technologists, drone and aerospace engineers.

With the new ACES Drone Center, we are looking for candidates with excellent leadership and teamwork skills to lead the development of drones and airborne sensing technologies. Candidates must have a PhD in a related field, significant experience with extramural funding as principal or coinvestigators, support existing ACES research projects, and work closely under the direction of the ACES director and with the ACES team to grow the Center.FAA Part 107 and/or Part 61 piloting certifications are required.
