Position Description:

Supervises the work of journeyperson in an assigned trade under the direction of a Foreperson. This position has operational and personnel oversight responsibilities over the assigned trade and assists the Foreperson in coordinating work activities of personnel and implementing expectations to carry out departmental objectives according to established policies and procedures.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Administrative duties - Submit accurate reports, reviews employee time sheets for accuracy, verifies Equipment Out of Services sheets, completes work orders, order required materials, writes and reviews employee PD's and evaluations, enforces policies.

  • Supervise maintenance and operations functions of the heating and cooling plants for the Fiber Biopolymer Research Institute, Texas Tech Museum, Texas Tech Research Park, AG Science Greenhouse, Bayer Crop (442) and greenhouse. Assist with maintenance and operations of the heating and cooling plants CHACP 1 and CHACP 2 ensuring all plants, buildings and greenhouses are operating “safely, reliably, and efficiently”.

  • Project Management - Oversees contractors working in the plant. Ensures contractors are working within safety regulations, work is completed within specifications, completed on schedule, within budget, reviews invoices for accuracy. Overseeing equipment delivers are correct, installation and acceptance testing is completed and documented.

  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and equipment material history to track and complete work orders. Safely troubleshoot, identify discrepancies and recommend effective repairs of equipment. Manages inventory control of plant Bench Stock parts. Anticipates preventive and regular maintenance and orders inventory parts as needed to maintain effective plant operations.

  • (Safety to plant personnel and equipment is a top priority) - Employee will work safely using safety training skills to identify and prevent unsafe acts. Mentor employees in safety practices and equipment training. Conduct periodic safety observations.

  • Supervisory duties - Training of subordinates and being an example of professionalism and excellence to assist in developing an atmosphere of Total Quality Management in the Utilities Department. Supervises, assigns projects, and provides technical guidance to subordinate personnel - Prioritize and assign work to Technicians, subordinates understand job standards and are provided proper coaching to complete tasks within standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or management or equivalent advanced formal technical training. Microsoft Office Specialist.

  • Ten (10) years supervisory/managerial experience in a high-pressure steam, high capacity chilled water production and distribution, diesel generator operation/maintenance, and electrical distribution. 3 years personnel supervision in an industrial plant. Formal training in maintenance management.

Required Qualifications:

Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. One year experience as a licensed journeyperson in the assigned trade; or four years experience in designated trade. Job-related vocational training and other education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the assigned trade.
