Applied Research Associates, Inc. Principal Scientist 2 in Littleton, Colorado

ARA is seeking a Principal Scientist to be part of our team in Littleton, Colorado. Standout candidates will have experience in one or more of these areas: Hypersonics (offensive and defensive); Reverse Engineering; Directed Energy; Less-than-lethal Technologies; Space (offensive and defensive); Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Defense; Additive/Advanced Manufacturing Technology; and Advanced Technology Development. ARA’s Littleton office supports a variety of customers in electromechanical systems integration, wearable technologies development, edge processing and algorithms, and advanced sensor systems. A successful candidate will have a technical background in a related area and the willingness to grow that area within the company.

As a Principal Scientist you will be expected to develop and lead a new business area or enhance an existing area. You will work with other principals, senior management, and business developers to understand customer needs in your business area and develop a capture plan to execute. You will develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Standout candidates should be prepared to discuss their technical and business development portfolio performing contract research or leading Government research activities. This position requires travel to conduct meetings, demonstrations, and business development activities.

This position requires the applicant to work on site.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited university with a PhD in a field of science or engineering relevant to directed energy or intermediate force capabilities technologies and at least 10 years of RDT&E experience since graduation; or

  • An MS degree in a field of science or engineering relevant to directed energy or intermediate force capabilities technologies with at least 15 years of RDT&E experience and a proven record of the specific experiences described are acceptable.

  • US citizen with the ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance.

For this position, travel is required 20% of the time.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Experience operating and directing research, development, test, and evaluation activities in both the laboratory and field.

  • Must have experience in business capture planning, including costing and writing technical contract research proposals.

  • Experience in concept development, requirements definition, and trade studies for new technologies.

Successful Candidates will Demonstrate:

  • Extensive knowledge of one or more of the following: Technology Prototyping, Hardware/Software Design, Development and Testing, Material Sciences, Microelectronics, Autonomous Systems, Modeling & Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and CBRN Defense and Sensing.

  • Exceptional analytical skills and problem-solving skills as demonstrated by technical portfolio.

  • Demonstrated superb organization, decision making, and verbal and written communication skills.

  • High level of self-initiative and self-motivation with the ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work effectively in small team settings to solve complex problems.

  • Experience developing, prototyping, and commercializing electromechanical systems for DoD or commercial customers.

  • Thorough understanding of requirements flow down, verification methodologies, calibration plans, Concept of Operations (CONOPS), Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and test plans to ensure program success.

  • Working proficiency using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), MS Outlook, MS Project.

What you’ll do as a Principal Scientist

  • Develop and maintain business relationships with customers and senior leadership as well as key industrial partners.

  • Provide input into long-range business plans and develop a detailed, associated marketing & capture plans, then execute those plans to grow ARA in new and existing markets.

  • Contact customers on a regular basis to understand their needs/plans and to describe how ARA technologies may help their efforts.

  • Assist with preparation/delivery of briefings to ARA senior leadership.

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to ARA scientists and engineers to help grow their overall capabilities.
