Jamestown Board of Public Utilities Electrical Engineer in Jamestown, New York

FT, Electrical Engineer, Jamestown ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services. Applicants must have graduated from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and two years of full-time paid experience in Electrical Engineering.

This is a professional technical engineering position that involves preparation of plans and estimates for construction and maintenance of pole lines, underground cabling systems, substations and street lighting projects. Assigning and laying out of work involved in new electrical distribution lines, the determination of sizes of wire, transformer capacities and rating of electrical protective devices associated with electrical distribution lines, spot checking crews to insure work performed is complete and correct. Meeting and working with customers and their contractors on installing new service. Creating and modifying CAD drawings for electrical substations. Utilizing power system analysis software for system protection and coordination, load flow analysis, short circuit calculations and arc flash hazard analysis. Maintaining the utilities SCADA, GIS, and fiber optic systems. Creating programs and programming IEDs such as protective relays, revenue meters, PLCs and other related devices. Creating switching orders for normal and emergency repairs; troubleshooting and outage investigation.

The position requires a thorough knowledge of electrical engineering procedures and practices in the design, operation and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution systems, thorough knowledge of the care, use and adjustment of electrical testing and measuring instruments and equipment, thorough knowledge of mathematics, formulae, the properties of materials, elements of engineering research and engineering economics as related to electrical distribution systems. Ability to prepare specifications, direct drafting of plans and prepare recommendations for electric system improvements and maintenance, supervise and lay out the work of others, prepare reports and maintain records and follow complex oral and written instructions. Proficient in the use of personal computers, mobile devices, computer software including Microsoft Office, power system analysis software, control system software, GIS and other related products. Physical condition commensurate with ability to do the job. The BPU offers a competitive salary and benefit package.

The position of Electrical Engineer falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall apply to this position.
