Position Summary

SUNY Geneseo is seeking applications for the position of Associate Provost for Academic Success.

Reporting to the Provost and a key member of the Provost’s leadership team, the Associate Provost for Academic Success ( APAS ) leads the college’s efforts in fostering student academic engagement, achievement, and completion. The APAS has a particularly important role in promoting equity-based practices that lead to greater student retention, completion, and post-graduation outcomes.

The APAS directly oversees and supervises Academic Affairs offices that provide frontline academic support services (including the Advising Office, the Access Opportunity Programs, International Student and Scholar Services, and the Office of Accessibility Services) and that support integrative and applied learning (including the Career Design Center, the Office of Study Abroad, and the Center for Integrative Learning).

As appropriate, the APAS serves as a student success resource for campus governance and college-wide committees focused on strategic planning, student well-being, curricular development, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

In support of success, retention, and completion efforts, the APAS serves as a key contact point between the Division of Academic Affairs and other divisions, particularly Student and Campus Life. In this function, the APAS works collaboratively to support and enhance programs that promote holistic student support and wellbeing, co-curricular residential, integrative, and applied learning experiences, and other high-impact practices.

The APAS also serves as the student appeals officer of the Division of Academic Affairs, overseeing Academic Standards, grade appeals, and serving as the final adjudicator of student appeals regarding faculty concerns and/or the administration of academic policy.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A terminal degree and academic qualifications commensurate with tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in an academic field represented in SUNY Geneseo’s major programs

  • 10 years’ experience in higher education with an equity focus that includes a combination of

  • classroom instruction,

  • academic and/or personal advising of students,

  • engagement in high-impact practices or integrative and applied learning, and

  • direct work with faculty and/or staff in developing and delivering programming and/or professional development relating to student success

  • Evidence of demonstrated leadership of a diverse team of administrators devoted to student academic success

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with students, faculty, staff, and administrators across the college

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment

  • Comprehensive knowledge of best practices in student academic success

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent listener, strategic thinker, and problem solver

Job Duty/ Responsibility

Function 1: Oversight and Supervision of Academic Support Services

  • Provide supervision of and ensure regular collaboration and integration among leaders of Academic Affairs units that enhance student’s academic success including those that engage in academic advising, career planning and development, and supporting historically-marginalized groups

  • Ensure regular collaboration, efficient workflows, and proactive information sharing with units in other divisions that provide personal support to students such as the Dean of Students, Residence Life, Student Life, Health and Counseling, and Admissions

  • Advise Academic Affairs leadership (including the provost’s office, deans, chairs, and directors) on strategic, equity-centered, and data-informed approaches to enhancing student retention and completion rates

  • Collaborate with other offices in reviewing, enforcing, and revising academic policies and practices pertaining to student success (e.g., registration, academic dismissal, grade appeals, etc.) as needed

  • Participate in and serve as the Academic Affairs point for college-level strategic planning and other efforts relating to student success

  • Serve as a member of the campus Incident Management Team to ensure that the student learning experience is prioritized in crisis response measures

  • Meet regularly with student cohorts (e.g., members of the Student Assembly, the Student Senate, and the Presidential Scholars) to provide assistance, guidance, and responses to student concerns about academic experiences

Function 2: Oversight and Supervision of Integrative and Applied Learning Initiatives

  • Provide supervision of and ensure regular collaboration and integration among leaders of Academic Affairs units that connect students with integrative and applied learning initiatives, including study abroad, internships, and other types of applied learning

  • Ensure regular collaboration, efficient workflows, and proactive information sharing with units in other divisions that support integrative and applied learning such as Residence Life, Student Life, and Advancement

  • Advise Academic Affairs leadership (including the provost’s office, deans, chairs, and directors) on strategic, equity-centered, and data-informed approaches to enhancing student access to integrative and applied learning initiatives

  • Collaborate with other offices in reviewing, enforcing, and revising academic policies pertaining to applied learning (e.g., rewarding of academic credit for non-classroom-based instructional experiences)

  • Participate in and serve as the Academic Affairs point for college-level strategic planning and other efforts relating to integrative and applied learning, including the IAL graduation requirement

Function 3: Academic Standards and Appeals

  • Oversee the Office of Advising and the academic deans in administering Academic Standards

  • Oversee the grade appeal process

  • Investigate student concerns regarding quality of instruction and make recommendations to relevant deans, chairs, directors, or the provost’s office for addressing them

  • Review and recommend academic policy relating to student success

  • Serve as the divisional appeal officer for issues relating to academic policy

  • Serve on the provost’s leadership team and participate in all meetings of divisional leaders

  • Serve as a resource member of the Strategic Planning Group and represent Academic Affairs as needed in governance deliberations on matters relating to student success and academic policy

  • Collaborate with offices that provide professional development support to faculty and staff in creating opportunities to engage campus partners with equity-based and student-centered strategies, practices, and pedagogies
