Flint Community Schools School Psychologist in Flint, Michigan

Job Summary:

To provide a comprehensive school psychological evaluation utilizing various techniques to determine the eligibility of children suspected of being handicapped.

Flint Community Schools, located in Flint, Michigan, is an urban public school system with about 5,000 students and 500 employees.  With campuses throughout the City of Flint, the district has a long and rich tradition of community education. Flint Community Schools provide a range of academic, extended services and extracurricular activities at the elementary and secondary levels to meet the needs of our students and their families.

Essential Functions:

  1. To continue to ensure that the rights of students with handicapping conditions and their parents are maintained and safeguarded.
  2. Participates in establishing procedures for early identification and intervention for learning, social and emotional difficulties in the pre-assessment of students suspected of being handicapped.
  3. To provide assessment and written psychological evaluations of intelligence, achievement, personality and adaptive behavior in identifying eligibility criteria for those suspected of mental impairment, learning disability, emotional impairment or other handicapping conditions.
  4. Chairperson for the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) Meeting and the Individual Educational Planning Committee (IEPC) for the consideration of mental impairment.
  5. To participate in MET's to consider a learning disability and emotional impairment as handicapping conditions as well as to participate in all other METs, as necessary.
  6. Provides a comprehensive psychological report for each student evaluated.
  7. Participates in all support staff meetings and participates in all in-services, as necessary.
  8. Responsible for carrying out the special education policies and procedures in all assigned buildings.
  9. To interpret all psychological assessment data in a meaningful and understandable manner to pertinent personnel such as parents, teachers and administrators.

*Education: *

Specialist Degree in School Psychology, or its equivalent and State full approval and/or State certification as a school psychologist (Special Education Code Rule 340.1152).

*Experience: *

Previous school psychology work experience in a public school setting or other related agency experience preferred.

*Skills: *

A school psychologist shall possess applicable knowledge of consultation and planning for effective classroom organization, social structures, implementation of effective teaching techniques and development of appropriate educational plans and behavior management programs.

Knowledge of the development of assessment procedures that measure instructional progress and learning outcomes for individual children.

Ability to assist in modifying instructional practices to make them more appropriate to the social and academic needs of students with diverse backgrounds and characteristics.

Knowledge and ability to analyze assessment instruments typically used to measure educational potential.

Ability to objectively analyze a situation in order to make a placement decision based solely on the best interest of that child.

Ability to provide educational programs or provide information to help parents, school personnel and others who work with youth to be more effective in their roles.
