MAIN FUNCTIONS:

The job functions as an assistant to the Support Service Supervisor (CLA Supervisor). In addition to having mastered all skills and competencies as a CLA 5, additional responsibilities around personnel, operational scheduling, training and mentoring are required. The expectation is that this individual can function independently and, with support of the Administrative Director, cover the responsibilities of the supervisor for a limited amount of time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1. General Responsibilities:

a. Organizes and prioritizes workload.

b. Is familiar with and maintains all regulations appropriate to assigned duties and is ready for unannounced inspections by staff, local, state, and/or federal regulatory agencies. This includes, but is not limited to: Medical Center, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

c. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.

d. Maintains a courteous and helpful rapport when dealing with patients, physicians, nurses, supervisors, visitors, coworkers, and other employees of the Medical Center. In patient relations, maintains respect for the individual. Communicates in a friendly manner. Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner. Works toward solutions to problems rather than complaining.

e. Appearance is always in compliance with dress codes as defined in the Laboratory and Medical Center policy manuals. Wears Medical Center name tag in appropriate location.

f. Respects the privacy of all patients and employees. Medical, financial, or other information is only accessed or discussed as necessary to perform required duties.

g. Contributes individual value to the operation of the Laboratory by reporting to work on all scheduled days. Ensures continuous coverage of the Laboratory at all times by accepting work assignments, such as shift assignments, overtime, or work station scheduling changes as defined by Laboratory and Medical Center policy.

h. Is familiar with, and applies all Corporate Compliance policies and procedures related to the position.

i. Is responsible for bringing unusual situations to the attention of the CLA Supervisor, or, in his absence, another section supervisor or the Administrative Director of the Laboratory.

j. Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality Improvement principles and participates in the process as appropriate.

k. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

l. Attends continuing education and staff meetings as appropriate; Participates in and documents the minimum number of continuing education hours required to maintain their professional certification. (Minimum of 9 points: 1 point in safety, 2 points in area in which you are certified, and remaining points in area of specialty, management, education and/or other related laboratory areas of interest).

m. Provides age appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

CORE COMPETENCIES: The assistant to the Support Service Supervisor, in addition to meeting all the core competencies of a CLA 5, will be expected to take on the additional duties identified below.

  1. Assumes responsibility for the staffing schedule, ensuring all PTO requests are properly submitted and approved by the Supervisor.

  2. Assists the Supervisor in assuring that all areas are adequately covered to minimize any disruption of service.

  3. Assists the Supervisor in making sure that procedures are up to date and are reviewed annually by all staff.

  4. Takes on the role of “charge” in the absence of the supervisor, addressing operational concerns and communicating with the Administrative Director or Medical Director as necessary.

    1. Assumes training and mentoring responsibilities, which include providing feedback to the supervisor regarding employees progress or improvement.
  5. Observes employee performance, provides feedback to staff directly when deviations for policy or procedure are observed and informs the supervisor of such incidents.

  6. Provides objective and professional assessments of staff at the request of the supervisor for use in employee annual evaluations.

  7. May take on call responsibilities in the supervisors’ absence.

  8. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as requested by position.

  9. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center.

  10. It is understood that this lists typical duties for the classification and is not to be considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate. Two years of training and/or work experience in health care or data processing helpful but not mandatory.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

Heartsaver CPR is required within 90 days of hire date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical effort required. Moderately heavy objects lifted. Moderate reaching. Much bending and stooping. Required to be on one’s feet much of the time.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
