Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (ECCM) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will join our dynamic team to become the 5th Small Animal ECCM faculty member and an integral member of the service, which includes 4 Diplomates of ACVECC (and an additional 3 large animal Diplomates of ACVECC), 5 residents, 2 ECCM Interns, and 20-30 service-dedicated licensed veterinary nurses. The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 30 faculty and has an onsite, state-of-the-art Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC provides outstanding patient care and is staffed with highly qualified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, social workers, and other care providers to support the specialty services. In addition to ECCM, the VMC is well represented in specialty areas including highly active soft tissue and orthopedic surgery services, internal medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, neurology, cardiology, anesthesiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, theriogenology, primary care, interventional radiology, behavior medicine, ophthalmology, and dermatology.

Support from the specialty services for the ECCM Service is robust, including but not limited to daily (7:00 AM to 10:00 PM) full clinical laboratory and imaging coverage, a dedicated emergency surgery resident, and advanced cross-sectional imaging modalities available after hours. The ER/ICU was recently rebuilt to create a large, open-concept ICU with a dedicated quiet (feline) room, two mirrored isolation wards, and four treatment stations, all with a centralized workstation allowing the team to monitor patients closely and communicate effectively. The ICU currently utilizes advanced treatment capabilities, including Draeger Evita Infinity and Respironics Esprit long-term ventilators and the Prismaflex CRRT system (capabilities for hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, ultrafiltration, and therapeutic plasma exchange). In addition, the hospital boasts an interventional radiology suite, a wound management suite, 10 operating rooms, Storz HD video laparoscopy/thoracoscopy towers, Zeiss operating microscope, GE Revolution 64-slice helical CT, OEC mobile C-arm, Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI, Scintron nuclear medicine suite, Varian linear accelerator, Olympus and Storz video-endoscopy.

The ECCM service has a highly successful resident training program with a busy caseload (>11,000 cases annually) and experienced, supportive faculty. The service sees 30-70 new cases daily and manages an average of 10-15 as inpatients. Our service philosophy focuses on active case management by all team members. The ECCM Faculty function as a highly cohesive group, and we value and are committed to continuing to foster this exceptional team dynamic.

The successful candidates' responsibilities will include management of ECCM cases, clinical instruction of house officers and students, assistance in the administration of the ECCM Service, and a commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidates' areas of interest and expertise. Ample opportunity exists for interested individuals to become involved in scholarly activity related to veterinary medical education and curriculum development.
