Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Central University Department of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with concentrations in performance, music education, the music industry (business and industry tracks) and jazz. Additionally, NCCU is one of only two HBCUs to offer a Master of Music in Jazz Studies in North Carolina. Student ensembles include University Choir, Sound Machine Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, String Ensemble, Jazz Combos, Guitar and Percussion Ensemble.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Music Department at North Carolina Central University seeks an Assistant Professor of Music in Jazz Studies. This is a tenured/tenure-track, full-time position to begin July 1, 2024. As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will be expected to perform duties as assigned and required by the Music Department and the University including recruiting students, building professional relationships with local, regional, national, and international jazz organizations, serving as a liaison to high school music programs, participating in department, university, and professional service and maintaining a roster of creative and/or scholarly activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Favorable candidates will have a record of national and international jazz performance as a side person and a leader, excellent jazz arranging, composition, and improvisational skills, expertise with pedagogy associated with a variety of jazz styles, a record of collegiality, working knowledge of music technology, and evidence of awards and recognition for professional and academic achievements. Experience as performer in Jazz styles and demonstration of pedagogical knowledge in jazz styles, jazz improvisation and jazz composition and arranging. Must show a minimum of five years experience as practitioner on their instrument and demonstrated ability of teaching on that instrument in higher education. Must have earned and completed matriculation as MM, or MA in Jazz Performance or Music Education with a concentration in Jazz Studies. Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent research and analytical skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others; teaching experience in higher education for private studio, small and large group ensemble performance.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ten years minimum experience as a educator, combined, in Secondary and Post Secondary/Higher Education positions, in Music Education, and/or Jazz Studies, Jazz Performance, Jazz Composition & Arranging.

Function Instructional

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Instructing students in Jazz Studies on the instrument of practice, and as needed in the Department of Music. Performances skills in solo, small and large group ensemble performance; Sight reading in instrument of practice, improvisation on instrument of practice. Creating and planning pedagogical activities and implementing a curriculum of student learning outcomes to align with the department program learning outcomes, and according to directives from the Director of Jazz Studies and the Department Chair.

Function Administrative

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Administrative tasks to maintain student records and instructional documents to determine student assessment, student learning outcomes and program learning outcomes with respect to the instrument of practice. Providing service to the department to assist the faculty and Department Chair to maintain the business of the unit, record keeping of courses taught and participating in mandated Department faculty meetings, college events and university events.

Function Planning and Organizing

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Planning and organizing opportunities for students that benefit the university, the college and the department. Service the university with respect to instructional tasks by accompanying students to local, regional, national and international travel destinations to perform at events, participate in conferences, competitions and symposium to advance the profile of the university, the college and the department. Recruit to the department at said events and on-campus activities to support the department, college and university.

Function Project Management

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Planning and organizing student recitals and student participation in presentations of research in oral presentations and poster presentations, on-campus and at trade events according to student population.
