Job Posting Summary

The Associate Director, Career and Professional Development provides vision and leadership in the design and delivery of career services, programming and tools for Mercy University students and alumni. This role is responsible for collaborating with the career team in developing and implementing an engaging, creative and comprehensive suite of career readiness programs, services and tools across all Mercy College locations and online.

The Associate Director leads or co-leads at least one Career Community, overseeing student advisors, planning community events, writing blogs, highlighting employers, publishing newsletters, proactively engaging with relevant students, faculty, and staff, etc. The Associate Director collaborates with relevant students, faculty, and staff to ensure effective career education in the industries represented in their Career Community and preparation for internships and career paths.

The Associate Director leads a major project for the department. Major projects include the department’s technology systems, marketing initiatives, career in curriculum initiatives, and experiential learning.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Career & Professional Development team in planning and executing undergraduate Career programming, including: career fairs, career event support; resume building; interview skills; LinkedIn; job/internship search strategies; professional etiquette and other programs and services consistent with advancing undergraduate student career readiness and career management skills. Ensure appropriate content for traditional college students and non-traditional adult populations.

  • Coach undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni in one-on-one sessions; present to groups on career readiness, career management skills, resources offered by the Career Team.

  • Lead a Career Community: (1) Create or update timeline, overall plan, content, student outreach strategy, faculty engagement plan, etc., and master technology, to facilitate a vibrant, relevant community and newsletters/other communication. Collaborate with Employer Relations co-lead to include relevant employer content and events. (2) Proactively build relationships with students in the Career Community and establish avenues for student feedback on Career Community activities. (3) Develop expertise and build relationships with faculty and staff to ensure community-specific opportunities and relevant resources are available to students. Support EPIC career in curriculum initiatives in your related School.

  • Teach career readiness skills via in-person and remote classroom visits and ensure student learning is relevant and assessed.

  • Coach undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni in one-on-one sessions; present to groups on career readiness, career management skills, resources offered by the Career Team.

  • Build and facilitate collaborative relationships with partners across the Division and University, including student groups, faculty, and staff. Get to know the Westchester campus in particular and ensure that the department and our programming are well represented on your campus.

  • Develop super-user level knowledge of our technology systems.

  • Manage staff member(s) and/or student employees, if assigned, ensuring workload is appropriate, development opportunities are provided, and feedback is given regularly.

  • Document constituent interactions in a data rich environment

  • Support Admissions and other groups’ events, as needed, which will include periodic Saturday and evening hours

  • Perform other duties/projects as assigned

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum three years’ experience required, with one to three years supervisory/managerial experience required; career development experience in a higher education setting strongly preferred.

  • Creative problem solving skills and ability to multitask in a dynamic environment is essential.

  • Ability to work with a highly diverse student body and collaborate with a wide range of faculty, staff, administration and business representatives required.

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment required.

  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, interpersonal relationships, and written and oral communication.

  • Highly organized with strong presentation skills.

  • A high level of computer proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, as well as internet search engines required. Experience with education / career systems such as Banner, Handshake, uConnect, Big Interview, and Focus 2 or similar strongly preferred. Experience as a systems super user a strong plus.

  • Comfort with and interest in learning new systems required.

  • Highly motivated self-starter able to work independently with great levels of responsibility required.

    Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.

    Physical/Other Requirements:

  • Ability to travel between campuses required.

  • Ability to work evenings/weekends as required.

  • Must be able to push, pull, move or lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to meet all general health requirements for the position as per university policies

    Compensation offered will be commensurate with the educational background and work experience of the individual.

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:

Deferred Compensation Plan

All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.

Defined Contribution Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.

If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
