Job Summary

Come lead our team of talented engineers in Danbury, CT. We are looking for an Engineering Director to manage Engineers at DRS Naval Power Systems. We offer a rare environment where projects are diverse; ranging from legacy systems designed in the 1980’s to the latest technology, ensuring that engineers remain challenged by their work. Engineers are involved in shaping project concepts from the start; collaborate on designs; contribute through individual implementation efforts; and see the results of their accomplishments through completion of integration and test.

The candidate hired for this position will have a track record of technical leadership built on engineering experience in designing and implementing complex systems utilizing DSPs, FPGAs, Microprocessors, and Microcontrollers; and different software applications such as video processing, instrumentation and control, power conversion and high speed serial and Ethernet communications. Experience leading hardware/software integration and working with new technologies is required. Experience with manufacturing environments and production engineering. Candidate must be an energetic, highly motivated individual with the ability to work off shift and weekend hours if needed.

This individual will also provide direct supervision to managers and working level engineers in an overall team of 10-20 personnel.

What You Will Do

  • Plan, manage, and direct the overall product and product development engineering activities of the Division or Department(s)

  • Coordinate the creation, development, design, and improvement of divisional products in conformance with established programs and objectives

  • Provide engineering advice and assistance to other departments as required

  • Responsible for formulating and recommending engineering policies and technical work assignments in accordance with project and company objectives

  • Advise appropriate personnel of the latest technical and engineering developments

  • Manage budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments and departments, as appropriate

  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required

  • Participate in preparation of proposals

  • Preparation of performance appraisals for direct reports

  • Responsible for scheduling and assessing staffing needs including attracting, hiring, and retaining top engineering talent

  • Manage customer relationship for teams of consultants, developers, engineers, analysts, and other professionals assigned to technical projects or customer work sites

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

  • Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings

  • May direct all engineers in Division or Department(s)

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related technical field (advanced degree or certifications may be required) with 10+ years of government contract administration experience and a minimum of five years of leadership experience or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Demonstrable working knowledge of engineering disciplines in multiple, relevant areas

  • Strong written and verbal communications are needed skills for the position

  • Proficiency with scheduling tools such as Microsoft® Project

  • Proficiency with Microsoft® Office tools including Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint

  • Ability and willingness for domestic travel up to 20%, international travel up to 5%, including air travel, as required

  • Ability to lead people in cross-functional design teams, resolve conflicts, provide feedback

  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills to aid communications within the engineering community

  • Technical, self-motivated leader who is action-oriented, with the ability to apply problem solving skills and sound judgment to complex issues

  • Data driven but willing to make decisions when needed with less than full information

  • Candidates must be a US citizen and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment
