Under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, this position assists with the implementation of a comprehensive trails program and is responsible for implementing, supervising, organizing, planning and directing current and short-ranged leisure programs and activities that enhance the use of our trail system. This position assists with the development and implementation of the Parks and Recreation Masterplan and is responsible for assisting and overseeing large projects outlined within the plan. This position will be directly responsible for ensuring a high quality of life for our residents by identifying and working with stakeholder groups to enhance and maintain the quality of our parks and recreation facilities including the direct oversight of the Geo Caching program, Cottonwood Dog Park, Disc Golf Course, and Community Garden. TASKS:

Trail Layout Planning, Design, Maintenance, Construction:

  • Improve and develop the Citys trails system.
  • Participates in the preparation and execution of trails management plans based on approved direction from City leadership regarding land management plans. Develops and maintains trail operating plans.
  • Assists with all phases of trail development projects including feasibility studies, trail design, land acquisition and trail construction.
  • Finds opportunities and prepares proposals for trail and open space grants.
  • Participates in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects.
  • Performs trail log, condition, and prescription surveys. Recommends the location of a variety of facilities, and records diverse information about the characteristics of the area.
  • Create and maintains an Adopt a Trail program that allows civic groups to maintain a dedicated trail.
  • Installs and Maintains trail wayfinding signs as necessary and appropriate.
  • Direct oversight of the Cottonwood Dog Park, Community Garden, and Disc Golf Course and is the community liaison with those use groups.

Partnerships & Volunteer Management:

  • Create and provide volunteer training on trail standards, construction and maintenance, crew leadership, trail protection and landowner negotiations.
  • Partner with community groups to help develop, clean, and maintain trails.
  • Create an Adopt a Park program that allows civic groups the opportunity to service dedicated City parks.
  • Provides liaison with community organizations and interest groups to stimulate interest in and utilization of recreation parks, trails, & facilities. Determines and recommends opportunities for community members to participate in programs and activities.

Additional Duties:

  • Acts as the primary Parks and Recreation Liaison on the Bicycle Advisory Committee and other assigned special interest groups.
  • Promotes the safety of park visitors, enforces park rules, and protects park & trail resources.
  • Acts as the liaison to the many user groups of our parks and recreation facilities and works directly with them to identify the needs and satisfaction of each user group.
  • Explores opportunities to implement the completed Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
  • Assists in delivering services in a variety of capacities throughout Parks and Recreation, to include helping or leading City special events, assisting or managing activities or personnel at the Recreation Center, or fulfilling other Parks and Recreation or City duties.
  • Actively supports and upholds the departments and Citys stated mission and values, including being open for business and providing excellent customer service that is externally focused.
  • Actively works to inspire a vibrant community through departmental work and ensures departmental work fits the Heart of Arizona Wine Country branding.
  • Will be responsible for other duties as assigned.
  • Creates and implements recreation-based programs.
  • Helps to develop a recreation and trails budget and is responsible for working within that budget.
  • Responsible for weed eradication via commercial spraying and/or hand removal based on ability to pass the required certification courses.
