Guthrie Surgical Technician - Operating Room - Full Time in Corning, New York

Position Summary:

Participates in surgical procedures, assists the registered nurse in‐patient care, maintains aseptic technique, prepares sterile and non‐sterile supplies and equipment. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon as required.

Education, License & Cert:

  1. Has successfully completed a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization.

  2. Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

Experience:

  1. Provides evidence that the person was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015; or

  2. Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.; or

  3. Holds a current LPN license in the state of practice with at least one year of clinical experience as an LPN (this option is available only after all efforts to recruit candidates referenced in 1‐2 above were unsuccessful).

Essential Functions:

  1. Completion of hospital and department specific orientation.

  2. Perform basic aseptic technique in accordance to policy and procedure of Corning Hospital.

  3. Basic knowledge of instrumentation for minor cases.

  4. Scrub minor cases alone.

  5. Working knowledge of electrocautery, suction apparatus, surgical tables, autoclave and steris processes and patient safety principles in the OR.

  6. Knowledge of surgical anatomy for each case scrubbed.

  7. Know surgical terminology specific to each case scrubbed.

  8. Knowledge of standard precaution guidelines of Corning Hospital

  9. Knowledge of instrumentation for all cases.

  10. Scrub all cases offered in the Operating Room.

  11. Knowledge of the use of specialty equipment, i.e.: ophthalmology microscope, laser, video endoscopy equipment, fracture table).

  12. Certification as an OR technician recommended.

  13. Functions in an “on call” capacity when assigned.

  14. Becomes proficient in a surgical specialty to maintain equipment, order supplies and perform inservice training for OR staff as requested.

Other Duties:

  1. Participates in patient care under the supervision of the surgeon, professional nurse and anesthesiologist.

  2. Is authorized to access secured storage areas in the performance of essential job functions and duties.

  3. Assists in the care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment.

  4. Works with Central Supply staff to ensure sterility of equipment.

  5. Performs supportive functions related to surgical procedures following principles of sterile technique.

  6. Follows Standard Precautions and utilizes disease specific precaution guidelines as per CDC guidelines.

  7. Utilizes and maintains surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s recommendations and department guidelines.

  8. Follows hospital safety guidelines.

  9. Follows all hospital Policies and Procedures.

  10. Participates and actively supports PI activities.

  11. Maintains biannual CPR.

  12. Completes annual education update.

  13. Attends and participates in Staff Development meetings.

  14. Completes at least 12 hours continuing education annually.

  15. Maintains certification, if applicable.

  16. Assists in orientation of new personnel to the department as well as developing skills of other staff members when requested or appropriate.

  17. Completes in‐services and self‐learn education programs as required.

  18. Rotates as needed on all shifts and days as requested; regularly demonstrates flexibility on an “on‐call” basis.

  19. Demonstrates good judgement and planning when responding to requests or questions while interacting with physicians, patients, and families.

  20. Responds to schedule/assignment changes quickly.

  21. Consistently shows good judgement by showing an appreciation of cost and quality.

  22. Reports any changes in the patient’s condition to appropriate personnel.

  23. Refers unsolved problems and consults with the appropriate person in order to pursue problem resolution through proper chain of command.

  24. Respects, at all times, the confidentiality of patient’s records, the progress, and utilizes complete discretion when discussing patient matters.

  25. Displays confidence and shows respect to patients, families, physicians, and other health care workers by performing job related duties in a highly professional manner at all times.

  26. Readily assists, supervises, delegates or consults with other staff members when requested or appropriate. Requests assistance from others as needed.

  27. Displays positive attitude/working relationships toward all internal and external customers.

  28. Demonstrates ability and judgement to coordinate simultaneous work requirements. Completes all scheduled assignments without sacrificing quality of care performed.

  29. Willing to accept additional responsibilities and duties related to the operation of the department as permitted.

  30. Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.

  31. Schedules benefit time appropriately. Acceptable attendance practices.

  32. Provides timely notification for absence or tardiness (2 hours).

  33. Takes appropriate breaks and returns promptly.

  34. Observes hospital dress code: wears identification badge while on duty and maintains a professional appearance at all times.

  35. Consistently strives to be an effective and productive member of the department and of the organization.

  36. Performs other duties as assigned.

The payrate for this position is $24.50 to $36.05.
