Reporting to the Northeast Division Executive, Regional Vice President will provide innovative, bold, and strategic underwriting, sales and marketing leadership for Westchester County through Buffalo. In this highly visible role, the RVP will create an environment which supports and motivates a mix of direct and indirect reports across Middle and Large Commercial as well as the entire Hartford Enterprise. Responsibilities include direct P&L management of the General Industries & Technology/Life Science business. Indirect responsibility for representing and assisting in the entire enterprise. The RVP will be a steward of the enterprise for our distribution partners, working closely with other business segments across Construction, Marine, Large Property, National Accounts, Complex Liability, Media/Arts/Entertainment, Excess and all business segments to strategically expand The Hartford’s market share within the territory. The RVP will work with the other members of the management team to establish partnerships across MLC and Global Specialty to increase the penetration of existing agency relationships and maximize opportunities across new distribution opportunities. This position will be based in Clinton, NY Office.

Responsibilities:

Distribution Management

  • Build initiatives to capitalize on opportunities and grow profitably in the territory, including identifying agents, what business we need from each of them, and capabilities required to achieve the plan.

  • Manage relationship with agents and brokers and aligning resources with greatest opportunities.

  • Actively manage the flow and mix of business to ensure that long-term financial outcomes are optimized.

    Sales and Underwriting Management

  • Coach Managers in the performance of their roles in order to ensure consistent practice of Underwriting and Sales Excellence.

  • Lead and manage all activities of the Middle Market Regional Office Management Team to achieve maximum effectiveness of initiatives and the achievement of objectives across all segments.

  • Monitor the progress of the business development team(s) against performance commitments and initiatives and implement specific initiatives to address shortfalls.

  • Ensure functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance with The Hartford’s guidelines, policies, and service standards. This includes the Quality Analysis process.

    Territory Business Leadership

  • Manage Middle Market book of business. Possesses a deep understanding of financial metrics and monitors same in an effort to identify trends and develops action plan for delivering desired financial outcomes. Uses financial discipline to guide business decisions.

  • Know and understand the book of business as well as the territory, including competitors, agents and brokers, and social and economic trends impacting the territory, and broad industry trends in order to identify and prioritize opportunities.

  • Build an effective network of relationships within the Division and Home Office to use insight to the market, key producers and competitors to influence processes, strategies and product offerings in order to promote financial success.

    People Management

  • Create and sustain a high performing team through effective and inspired leadership .

  • Assess performance and potential accurately and align rewards with performance.

  • Build and leverage diversity and inclusivity within the organization. Imbed a culture in which employees follow willingly and enthusiastically.

  • Lead change effectively.

    Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10+ years progressive experience in Middle Market underwriting, sales and supervision required.

  • In depth knowledge of Commercial underwriting principles, with experience in Middle Market

  • Underwriting, sales and use of predictive modeling tools.

  • Proven track record in successfully leading and engaging a team, building a talented organization, coaching and developing staff, leading change, and promoting a high-performance culture. Able to build and sustain a positive and inspiring underwriting and sales culture within the team.

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skill and ability to engage others across the Enterprise in your vision, and gain consensus.

  • Strong business knowledge and decision-making skills including an ability to exercise sound business judgment, leverage market and competitor intelligence, apply financial acumen and negotiate for success.

  • Ability to develop effective and productive working relationships, including relationships with key customers as well as colleagues at all levels of the organization. Well-honed influencing skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required. Advanced degree, CPCU/CIC or other designations preferred.

  • Travel is required within the territory up to 50%

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$192,160 - $288,240
