Position Summary:

The School of Architecture and Planning (https://archplan.buffalo.edu/) , University at Buffalo (UB) a flagship campus of the State University of New York, invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor and Director of Research for the newly endowed ($5M) Rudy Bruner Center for Urban Excellence (https://archplan.buffalo.edu/research/research-centers/rudy-bruner-center-for-urban-excellence.html) ( RBC ) . The RBC is a Schoolwide enterprise that reports to the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. The Director of Research will have a tenure home in either the Department of Architecture (https://archplan.buffalo.edu/academics/Architecture.html) or the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (https://archplan.buffalo.edu/academics/urban-regional-planning.html) and is an academic year appointment with dedicated time for developing research, educational, and strategic initiatives. The appointment will have research, teaching, and service responsibilities.

We seek a visionary and collaborative scholar to develop and implement RBC research and sponsored program agendas with the faculty and staff associated with the Center. The RBC Director of Research will collaborate with architecture and planning partners across the School, including the UB Regional Institute, the University Libraries, and the MS in Real Estate Development program, and with departments throughout the University.

The candidate will develop and lead sponsored programs, funded research, and strategic projects that impact national scholarly and professional debates on urban excellence. Working with the Rudy Bruner Chair in Urban Excellence, the Director of Research’s scope of work includes the further development and curation of the Rudy Bruner Awards library collection, the conduct of public and scholarly forums on the actual complexity of urban placemaking, publications related to the Bruner body of work, the creation of urban learning resources for a wide range of audiences, and sponsored projects creating great places. The Director of Research’s scholarship should be rooted in the complex and cross-disciplinary practices pursuing urban excellence. Furthermore, the candidate should demonstrate dedication and expertise in educational programming, growing collaborative relationships, and nurturing programs and departmental faculty activity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for tenure with a Ph.D. or terminal degree in Architecture or Urban and Regional Planning with expertise in one or more subjects (including but not limited to urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation, sustainability, urban analytics, and the visualization of complex data, real estate development and finance, or other topics related to urban excellence).

  • Distinguished record of scholarship and demonstrated potential ability to obtain extramural research or project funding, commensurate with the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership in and engagement with the national and international urbanism professions and disciplines. Demonstrated record of research excellence (e.g., successfully sponsored research, publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, book publications, and research awards)

  • Research project management experience including, but not limited to, preparation and overseeing budget management, supervising personnel, etc.

  • Significant teaching experience with substantial capacity and potential for outstanding teaching contributions to our School programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels
