Acad College Discovery Student Support Specialist
POSITION DETAILS
Provides educational programs, academic advice, and assistance to College Discovery students College Discovery is a higher education opportunity program established at CUNY’s Community Colleges to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college.
Provides advice and to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed
Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities
Develops interventions related to student academic status and success
Reports on activities and outcomes; assisting with report-writing, and data collection
Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming
Performs related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) and two years’ related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in counseling, education, psychology or related discipline is required. A minimum of five years’ experience working with a diverse, multicultural student population in an urban education setting, proficiency using database technology and excellent interpersonal skills are required. Applicants should be available to work evenings and weekends, as needed. Additional preferred qualifications include:
Experience in individual and small group instruction
Teaching experience particularly a freshmen seminar or student success
Write grant proposals and acquire funding to assist with the development of new programs and services
Experience with student transition and/or retention programs
Knowledge of assessment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Competence in a range of computer applications (e.g. internet research, MS Office, social media and student registration systems)
PeopleSoft experience preferred

CAMPUS-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Bronx Community College/CUNY has an opening for a College Discovery Counselor. College Discovery is the City University’s higher education opportunity program, which provides comprehensive counseling and academic support services for eligible students.
College Discovery Counselors are key members of the Program’s faculty and staff that are responsible for providing comprehensive advisement and counseling services to help ensure the academic success of students enrolled in the Program. Counselors report directly to the Director of College Discovery and maintain a collaborative relationship with other counseling and student support services offices within the Department and the College.
Provide various counseling services including orientation, registration, academic advisement educational counseling, career and transfer assistance
Monitor student performance and schedule appointments as indicated
Monitor and manage the completion of counseling assessments and interventions for probation and at-risk students
Provide consultation services to instructional and administrative staff regarding students:
Consult with and maintain liaison with classroom instructors and monitor student progress
Work jointly with program counselors and instructional staff in achieving program goals
Collaborate with the College Discovery Academic Support Coordinator to identify students’ academic needs, track and monitor utilization of services, and facilitate students’ success
Coordinate the College Discovery Developmental Education Center “DEC” College Success workshops and group counseling activities to help address socio-economic factors that impact students’ success, including Work and Family, Domestic Violence, Health and Wellness, Homelessness, Parenting (or single mothers), and Substance Use,for example
Develop academic interventions and other initiatives to help improve students’ academic performance and Program outcomes such as pass rates for the basic skills tests and overall rate of progress, including accumulated degree credits and grade point averages
Implement crisis intervention protocol, including referrals, in emergency situations
Present at local and national conferences
Participate in academic program development, program research activities and the preparation of reports
Serve on College and University committees
Serve on the CUNY-wide SEEK/CD Council of Counseling Coordinators meetings
Perform other duties, as assigned by the Director, including but not limited to the following:
Coordinate the student eligibility document verification process
Maintain counseling records and assist with program assessment and evaluation activities
Assist with identifying college work study students and peer advisors
Monitor the college work study staffs’ hourly allocations and prepare timesheets
Oversee the coordination of the activities and events for the Program
